Product Description

CD Description

The Piedmont school of 'Carolina Country Blues', was typified by guitar picker Blind Boy Fuller and the Reverend Gary Davis. Their work, particularly in the immediate pre-war years of 1935-40, was to have not just nationwide but global reverberations. The south-east tradition they established carried on after the war by the legendary harmonica player Sonny Terry and singer, pianist and guitarist Brownie McGhee. Our compilation here comprises four original albums from the 1950s with bonus tracks. Two of the albums feature Terry and McGhee playing together ('Get On Board' and 'Washboard Band', the others ('Brownie McGhee Blues' and 'Sonny Terry's Washboard Band') are solo ventures.

This isn't just one of those "Best of"-records with a random selection of songs but a compilation of four classic albums by Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee (originally released on Folkways Records). Disc one includes "Get on Board" (1952) and "Washboard Band" (1956, featuring Pete Seeger on the Banjo) by both Terry and McGhee, while disc two includes the solo albums "Brownie McGhee Blues" and "Sony Terry's Washboard Band" (both 1955). All the album tracks are featured in their original running order and supplemented by 9 bonus tracks from the 1940s. Included are short but informative sleevenotes by Michael Heatley. The sound quality (at least of the Folkways recordings) is quite good but suffers somewhat from an overuse of noise-filtering. Altogether this is indeed a great offer by Not Now Music.

Oldie and a goodie 13 Sep 2010
Format:Audio CD
Discovered these guys on EP vinyl when I was a kid and jiving to trad jazz. Now a pensioner. Their style is still unique, direct, unpolished but very talented, especially the harmonica rhythms. It's honesty and fireside friendliness make a refreshing change in this predictable, high amp, glitz-with-your-cornflakes age. If you're interested in how the blues developed into rock music this is a fascinating example of the many facets of the metamorphosis. It's electric but without a wire in sight. It really rocks.

Unexpected delight 6 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD
I wasn't that familiar with Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee but have found this company's double album specials very good value and great ways to broaden my knowledge of all sorts of musical roots. I may not go on to track down every original recording but am glad I bought this - and recommend it wholeheartedly as an introduction to the work of some awesome musicians.
