In the typical Don Simpson-Jerry Bruckheimer mould(the partnership yielded Top Gun and Days of Thunder, among many other films), this 1995 drama is a combination of one-dimensional but enjoyable performances, lots of high-tech nonsense taking place onscreen, and mechanistic movie-making at its loudest and most seizure-inducing. Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington play nuclear submarine officers squaring off over the former's apparent intention to do some unauthorized damage to an enemy. Tony Scott (Top Gun) directed, bringing his lustre and pop commercial sense to go with all that Simpson-Bruckheimer eye candy. --Tom Keogh

Director Tony Scott does an extremely good job in making this into a great thriller. When a film is set almost entirely on board a submarine it can't be easy to come up with enough excitement to fill two hours. Fortunately thanks to great performances from Hackman and Washington, and a great supporting cast Scott manages to pull this off. It's hard work building up the tension in the first hour without losing the viewer but it's achieved here thanks to a few action set pieces and a bit of pop culture dialogue that was added to the script courtesy of Quentin Tarantino. The last half hour or so is a real power struggle between the two leading men and it almost makes the viewer feel as though they're trapped on the sub with them such is the intesity of the performances. A totally solid and absorbing thriller.

Crimson Tide was one of the best movies I've ever seen, combining action, drama, suspense, and great acting by a good cast. The rivalry between Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman is very moving and they keep the tension at a high rate throughout the movie. All the supporting actors turn in strong performances as well. Also, the superb soundtrack by Hans Zimmer perfectly captures the drama of the film. All in all, an absolutely fantastic piece of cinematography, with outstanding performances all round. This is a movie that shouldn't be missed.

It's a heavyweight bout we all deserve... Ali had his day with Foreman, maybe we'll never see Tyson slug it out with Lewis - but here you'll see two big guns face each other off in real style. And no pre-match tension just for the cameras. These two guys, who are not normally my favoured champs, take Home Cinema to where it should be.. dim the lights, crank up the system and allow the sometimes uncomfortable claustraphobic rumble to envelope the room. A titanic struggle just dares you to switch off; Hackman as the stalwart veteran and Washington as the younger, more intuitive leader.

The twists and turns are real and unexpected, and as the film goes on even the most agoraphobic soul will wish they were in daylight and out of the nuclear rat race.... watch it, it's worth it.
