Product Description

When his parents are murdered, seventeen-year-old Prince Travis celebrates his freedom from a loveless and harsh upbringing by running riot with his friends. He doesn't curb his behaviour until warned by his elderly guardian and then threatened by the intimidating Lord Chief Justice.

Travis is crowned king, but rumours continue to link him to his parents' deaths. A strange breed of Guardians, masquerading as a sword master and a maid, start work at the palace. Not long after, Travis' brothers and sister are subject to murder attempts. Travis realises that his entire family is in peril and, king or not, he desperately needs help and advice.

In a race to find the killer before he strikes again, the king's advisors and the Guardians become dangerously at odds. Meanwhile, Travis goes on a clandestine mission that will lead him to the unimaginable truth.

"Distracted for a moment, Lyssia strayed into the middle of the cobbled yard and stooped to pick up a vividly crimson leaf wedged between stones. With five lobes and a network of veins, it looked like a hand, gnarled and bloodied." ~ Crimson Leaf

Who poisoned the wine that killed 17-year-old Crown Prince Travis's parents, the king and queen?

Murder, betrayal, treachery, heartbreak... this novel has it all. The vibrant, sensory descriptions bring the story to life, while the polished, fluid writing has you forgetting you're even reading a book. Crimson Leaf is more murder mystery than fantasy, and as much romance as coming-of-age: a captivating story that I think would appeal to young adults and adults alike. Highly recommended.

A well crafted tale of murder with the added spice of magic and romance. Strongly defined characters with believable strengths and flaws set in a world that offers hints of a history worth further exploration. Here's hoping the author chooses to revisit this world.

Who to suspect? Who has an axe to grind? I love a mystery and this story really kept me guessing. I was genuinely worried for the young prince and his siblings and confess to being tempted to turn to the end prematurely, but thankfully resisted.

I enjoyed the pace and straightforward writing style throughout. Pleasingly observational but not over the top, SM Jonas manages to capture typical modern teenage traits and emotions and transplant them seamlessly into this fantasy world.

I hope the author follows this up with further adventures as it would be good to see how the characters develop as they face the future together.
