Another fine novel in an interesting Realms series., 7 Jan 2004
This is another in the Forgotten Realms 'Rogues' series of books. The series are basically a collection of stand alone books tied together just by being about rogues of various type, so you could read this as the first ot last or only book in the series with no difficulty. The book itself deals with Tazi, the protagonist from several of the 'Sembia' series and a part player in the 'Erevis Cale' series of the moment. She is a feisty hot tempered character, different from the other characters in the previous novels as she does not mind a fight and is less a stealthy thief and more an adventuring rogue in my view. The book itself starts well and it does not give too much away to say it is based in Thay a mage-centric and despotic land in the Forgotten Realms. Some of the descriptions here are very good and some a little different to how I imagine Thay, especially in some of the interactions between the big boss wizard Zulkirs. The plot is fairly simple and floats towards the heroic fantasy side of things rather than a gritty earthy book. It is quite silly really especially towards the end, but that is not always a bad point in heroic fantasy so that is not too much of a problem. It is certainly a quick and easy paperback read that should not stretch anyone for a few hours, rather than a meaty novel to get stuck into. Good points are that it is a fast and easy read, it has some interesting views of Thay, some of the support characters are interesting and a little different, the heroine is quite cool and if you play 3ed D&D then numerous bits from the rules and the campaign setting pop up all the time. Bad points are that the plot is a little weak, I don't think that the big bad Zulkir of Necromancy acts or appears as he does in this book in other FR products and it feels a bit contrived towards the end. I also think it could have done to have another 100 pages but that is not what you should be looking for in FR books I suppose. I liked it, but I do tend to like the FR world and most things in it. Buy it if you are the same, you like reading a bit of source for you own campaign or you just like an easy fantasy romp.
