There are many big names in comics, Alan Moore, Brian Bendis, Robert Kirkman, Geoff Johns, Mark Waid; but there is one name that I see everywhere and it is one name that instantly makes me buy a book, because of Criminal and that name is Ed Brubaker. I heard of him and Sean Phillips a lot and I had heard of Criminal but for some reason I held off buying it, maybe because of my hesitation towards crime graphic novels. Yet I now feel stupid for doing that because Criminal is a great book and this deluxe edition feels like the only true way to experience it because of the nice binding, great size and reproduction and the extras that are included in the back.
In this edition there are three trades worth of story, although the third book seems to focus on a different person every issue, but they all tie in somehow; which is one of the elements that make this story great, there are different stories, but they all somehow connect and at no point does it feel like it is forced and actually resembles the real world quite well.
However, the only downside that I can see with it is that the stories actually end, in the few issues that you see the characters you begin to care about them and I personally was a bit saddened when each story came to it's end.
Sean Phillip's art work is indescribable with how great it is, it manages to convey a certain tone and makes it feel like a crime story and his painted covers are nothing short of perfection (it should actually be illegal for something to look that good). I am just so glad I have an original sketch from him.
I hope a second volume comes out in this format as it is probably nicer than some of the DC absolute editions I own and it looks great on a shelf, I only hope that my book that I've written is 0.1% as good as Criminal, because if so, it will be pretty damn good.

Thank you Ed Brubaker and Thank you Sean Phillips.

It's a steal! 28 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
Three intertwining stories of the life of low level thugs. Brubrakers rich storytelling is paired with Phillips's detailed style. The characters feel alive, if not quite sympathetic. A great book with great stories, but not for someone looking for happy ends.

Comic book genius 24 Jun 2011
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book on recommendations from comic book collectors on Twitter. I know it's not the best source of recommendations but after this I'll definitely be taking some more of these guys seriously, as they seem to know good Comic books when they read them. This book is a deluxe hardcover copy of three comic book series by Ed Brubaker and illustarted by Sean Phillips. The stories are gritty and tough, they have adult themes in them so definitely not one for the kids, it has a feel of Sin City about it but with more grit and realism than you would get from Frank Millers world. This feels real, it feels dangerous and the way that Brubaker sets these characters up you really care about what happens to them. It has a Tarrantino style about the book, the kind of criminal activities that would feature well in Pulp Fiction or Resevoir Dogs and just as interesting characters.

This book is well worth a read. I'm sure it will be considered a Comic book classic in years to come.
