If it's going badly... get off. If it's going well... get off.,

Criminal Tendencies: Great Stories from Great Crime Writers
The above quote from Mark Billingham's forward to this poignant anthology sums it up beautifully. In a collection of 26 stories (mostly 'cosy crime') by leading crime writers as well as some less-known ones, there will inevitably be some tales which are better than others. However, this is the beauty of short stories. If you don't like one - at least it didn't take too much of your time to read. And if you love it, well - it will linger in your mind for the rest of the day or even the week. Kudos to Crème de la Crime for publishing this collection in a time where not many publishing houses do short stories. Like anything else, short stories go in and out of fashion, but there's nothing like a good one to keep you company on your bus ride, while waiting for an appointment or just before going to bed. This collection is definitely worth picking up; you'll surely find something in it to enjoy. My favourites are Simon Brett's "Work Experience", Martha Cooper's "Neutral Territory" and Sarah Rayne's "The Masquerade". Your favourites may be others, but you will surely find a few in this anthology. Like a bag of chips, if you start with the first story, you'll inevitably need to read them all before you put the book down. While chips are bad for you, these short stories are not only delicious, but also nutritious. And did I mention they give GBP 1 from each copy to the UK National Breast-cancer Helpline? Even more of a reason to invest in your own copy rather then borrow a friend's.

disappointing,

I really looked forwarded to reading this book of short crime stories, but overall I found the stories to be rather insipid, without structure and some of them quite bizaar. I quote Mark Billingham when he wrote in his foreword that "it is harder to write a great short story than a good novel" Many of these writers may be able to write a good novel but I'm afraid failed in their attempt at a good short story, however I can thankfully encourage Andrew Taylor to write another of his short quirky mystery stories "Waiting for Mr. Right", this was a delight to read. The short story by Sheila Quigley "Hungry Eyes" was to me a story which was, in fact, a well structured short crime story which I enjoyed reading.

This collection of stories is a perfect gift for a busy husband. I was delighted with how quickly the book arrived.
