Product Description

Review

'Palgrave Law Masters Series has an excellent reputation for providing fantastic introductory texts. The fifth edition of Criminal Law by Jonathan Herring continues in that vein by providing an excellent introductory text on criminal law. Criminal Law is separated into five parts: basic principles of criminal liability; offences against the person; offences against property; defences and participation in crime. Each chapter adopts a similar approach by providing small manageable sections followed by hot topics, summaries, case notes and further reading.  These extract sections (over and above the commentary) are excellent features. Jonathan Herring has, impressively, ensured the material remains clear and easy to read.  By doing so, he allows the reader to quickly understand the important parts of an offence which the prosecution needs to prove.  The reader can then turn to the defences part to consider potential arguments for the defence.  Fortunately, the case notes (where appropriate) explain the finer issues which are commonly overlooked in introductory texts. Criminal Law is another excellent text from the Palgrave Law Masters series.  It is extremely readable for any reader.  It also provides excellent value for money and allows the reader to quickly understand the basic principles of criminal law whilst being alerted to the wider issues'

Product Description

The fourth edition of Criminal Law: Text, Cases, and Materials offers an exceptional depth of analysis, a wealth of cases and materials all set within the theoretical context of criminal law. The effective two-part structure of each chapter in the book - the first part explaining the law as it is, the second examining the theoretical aspects - ensures that readers not only gain a secure understanding of the law itself but also acquire a fundamental appreciation of the surrounding philosophical and ethical debates. Important theoretical material is made accessible to students through a particularly engaging writing style. The author's clarity of expression brings the subject to life and places the law in context. This text is an essential and complete resource for all those wanting to get to grips with the always fascinating and sometimes challenging area of criminal law today. Online Resource Centre This book is accompanied by an Online Resource Centre, offering detailed updates to the law following publication, useful weblinks, and guidance on answering questions in the book. Video footage of the author talking about the book and his approach to criminal law provides the perfect introduction to your studies.

A great book 24 Mar 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I bought this book as some extra reading for part of my Open University Law Degree. It is written in an easy to read way and provided clear arguments on many cruical issues. Studying with the OU you tend to have to work things out for yourself from cases and workbooks. This book was much easier to understand than the textbooks provided with the course. The section on Consent as a defence was excellent and helped me get 88% for my essay! Nice one. I also found it great for revision.

I have previosuly bought "Legal Method" from the same series and intend to by the Tort and Contract books for my continuing studies.

I bought this book to help me get up to date on criminal law before some work experience & really wished I had had it when studying criminal law. It lays everything out incredibly clearly & tells you about the issues & cases you need to know to pass an exam. Highly recommended.

Best first year book 14 Sep 2007
Format:Paperback
This was the only book that I had to read in my first year that I actually liked. It was clear and written in a kind of friendly way so that you felt like the writer was trying to explain things rather than prove how clever he was to understand such complicated things. I found the two section approach useful becuase I could start with the basics and stick with that side if I needed to like with intoxication or go over to the hard side with easier topics or so that i could write an essay. It is pretty mcuh like two books in one which is great bacuse it saves money too. The best thing is that it makes the topics interesting. My gran read the chapter on murder although I don't really know why and even she said it was great and kept telling me things that she knew. She said that she'd recommend it to anyone who wanted to write a detetctive story becuase they often get things about the law wrong and it really annoys her. I'd recoommend it to anyone studying criminal law.
