Crimes of Passion from 1980 is a superb album of tuneful & catchy rock & pop, including dramatic ballads & uptempo heavy rock. Around this time, Pat was one of the top four female rockers along with Ellen Foley, Debbie Harry of Blondie and the leather-clad Joan Jett.

Pure rock with sparkling cascades of guitar is manifested in You Better Run, the pop ballad in Never Wanna Leave You and the serious side of rock in the disturbing, tempo shifting Hell Is For Children which deals with child abuse (..."hell is for children/and you should not pay for your love/with your bones and your flesh" ...).

My favorites include the rock ballad Hit Me with your Best Shot, the vibrant & rhythmic Little Paradise which should have been a huge hit, the rollicking Prisoner of Love and her interpretation of Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights which is quite good - who else would have dared? It's got more of a rock punch in the choruses, with whining guitars & pounding drums.

Those who like melodic rock along the lines of Blondie, Joan Jett, The Cars and even The Knack will enjoy Crimes of Passion.

In the UK, Pat Benatar is best known for her top 20 hit 'Love Is A Battlefield', and a handful of other singles. 'Crimes Of Passion', her second album didn't light any bonfires in this country (despite only just missing the top spot in the US). Nevertheless, this is a quality uptempo pop/rock album which showcases her strong and versatile vocals. Pat is just as at home singing catchy rockers like 'Treat Me Right' and 'Prisoner Of Love', to bravely tackling the Kate Bush classic 'Wuthering Heights'.

The album first caught my eye after seeing that it included the radio and karaoke favourite 'Hit Me With Your Best Shot' and 'Heights', two songs I've always enjoyed. I needed have worried that her version of the latter wouldn't hold up well compared to Kate's, Pat's cover might somewhat lack the emotion and surrealism of Kate Bush, but she definitely puts an interesting and different spin on it. I honestly can't say there is a song on here I dislike, but 'Hell Is For Children' is worthy of a special mention. This rocker sends out a very powerful message, with the lyrics basically explaining how children have to go through hell when they are living with abusive parents.

Despite never making the impact she should have done (in the UK at least), I'd still say that Pat Benatar is up there with the best of female rock vocalists. If you only buy one of her studio albums, I'd say that 'Crimes Of Passion' is the one to get.

One of the things about a Pat Benatar album, you might know all about the hit singles like "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and "Hell Is For Children" (a very ironic ordering of tracks to be sure), but what you always get are a couple of gems that are actually better songs. On "Crimes of Passion" that would be the Geraldo/Benatar composision "Never Wanna Leave You" and the cover of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heighs." Benatar is one of those artists who could put together an awesome disc of "B-Side" songs that never pop up on a greatest hits CD. She might have training in singing opera, but the lady can rock and roll big time. The irony of course was that Benatar does her big song about child abuse and no one really notices because it is a rock and roll song and then Susanne Vega gets all sort of notice for doing the same thing with her "folk" song "Luka."
