Crime Story was one of my favourite TV shows from the 1980's, it was a real in in your face cops and robbers drama with some superb acting performances and great music.
Series 2 starts off with a few lower key episodes for Mike Torello and his team, the opener features Kevin Spacey as a crusading US Senator followed by the re-appearance of Torello's ex-wife whose new husband has been kidnapped.
As with the first series the show picks up several notches when Ray Luca (Anthony John Denison), who was presumed killed in an atomic explosion at the end of the first series re-appears on the scene, along with his right hand man Pauli Taglia (John Santucci). Luca
quickly acts to take care of the opposition and to position himself as the rightful heir to Crime Lord Manny Weisbord.
There are some great performances throughout by the two main leads, as well as Stephen Lang as Attorney David Abrams and by Andrew Dice Clay as Max Goldman. When Abrams goes off the rails he seeks assistance from Luca and is soon using his legal skills to help Luca run his businesses.
With a top US military official on Luca's payroll and Torello's squad seemingly unable to bring him down they eventually arrange to bring him to a Senate hearing which is unfortunately interrupted by the start of one of the major events from the 1960's.
The episodes around the Senate hearing lose some steam as they have a large amount of flashbacks used as fillers but the final few episdoes are far better as Luca and Taglia flee to Mexico and are soon back in business with Torello seemingly unable to extradite them and having to go beyond the law to bring Luca back.
The final episode has a climactic ending of sorts but understandably not quite on the scale as that of the first series but this time there was no return for Torello or Luca.
There's plenty low-life action with gambling, prostitution, drugs and crooked cops as well as a funny one-off episode involving a defecting Russian fighter pilot.
As with the first series there's plenty guest appearances including Pam Grier, David Soul (who also directed a couple of episodes), Michael J Pollard, Billy Zane and Laura San Giacomo.
Although the ending was pretty weak I still enjoyed watching the series again after many years, it's just a shame there are no extras.
