Product Description

Review

"The style of writing varies somewhat between authors but it remains accessible and engaging throughout, is very clearly laid out and is eminently suitable for its target audience of police officers, newly–appointed crime scene investigators, undergraduates and those requiring a foundation in the entire forensic process as part of their career." (The Howard Journal of Criminal Justice, 1 July 2011)

"What is extremely good about this book is that it poses a series of self assessment questions at the end of each topic and provides a comprehensive list of further reading. There is also an associated website linked to this book on which are posted answers to the self assessment questions and high resolution images to support the text in the book. In summary this is an excellent text book for undergraduate students and those about to start the role of a Crime Scene Examiner without any prior knowledge of the subject." (Finger Print Whorld, March 2011)"Crime Scene Management: scene specific methods is an appropriate text for the targeted audience. I would recommend its use as a primer for first year undergraduate teaching in forensic science, crime scene management and criminology." (Reviews, December 2010)

"This is a very good basic introductory book which is well written, practical, readable and reliable.... Of significant interest to all who deal with criminal cases." (The Journal Online, November 2009)

"This is a very good basic introductory book which is well written, practical, readable, and reliable, and would be valuable to the practitioner because its limited content focuses on areas regularly dealt with in the courts." (Law Society of Scotland, November 2009)

Product Description

Crime Scene Management is an accessible introduction to the common forms of evidence that may be encountered at a scene of crime and the techniques used for recovery of that evidence. The book is clearly focused on the techniques for handling crime scenes from the role of the first officer attending through to the specialist personnel who may be called to deal with specific evidence types. Clearly structured to enhance student understanding, methods covered include, DNA–rich samples, fingerprints, toolmarks and footwear impressions. Later chapters move on to consider examples of specialised scenes such as arson and vehicle crime. The content of each chapter can be tested with self–assessment questions to reinforce student understanding.

Written for undergraduate students studying forensic science courses, Crime Scene Management will also be of interest to scene of crime officers, police officers and legal professionals as well as students taking courses in criminalistics and law.

  • Focuses on the crime scene and on the science underpinning the gathering of evidence at the scene

  • Written in conjunction with experienced practitioners

  • Supplementary website to include figures from the book and further references

  • Suitable for delivery in a modular course.

  • Chapters written by a team consisting of experts and academics to ensure an accessible and well–informed text.

Having studied Forensics at the University of Wolverhampton, and having received lectures from all but one of the co-authors, each author/lecturer knows what they're talking about, and this book is extremely helpful when discussing the specific roles, types of evidence and report writing expected of forensics students at degree level. The ways in which many, many types of evidence must be handled, packaged and stored is discussed thoroughly and there are many sets of end of chapter questions to test how well you've retained the information. However, there are no answer pages appearing anywhere in the book, which means a lot of time unnecessarily spent flicking back and forth to check your answers.

Of particular interest to me is the photography chapter written by crime scene photographer Chris Crowe. The details within this chapter can also be applied to photography generally and helped me greatly when taking crime scene photos and photography generally.

This book was on the core reading list for one of my modules of forensic science at university. It's a brilliant text and is set out very well and makes understanding the principles of forensics easier. The use of images and diagrams clearly help the text and each chapter helps to highlight the material we've gone through in lectures.

I bought this book on a recommendation of my lecturer (I'm studying forensics at uni) and I have to say its one of the best books I've bought regarding crimes scenes. I have had 5 assignments from my lecturer on physical evidence and for every single one I've used this book in some way to write up my reports, definitely worth the money!!
