Review

"Crime Scene Investigator is a good balance between a series of good true stories and practical application of crime scene work and management. It's a book every graduate in forensic science should read and digest. Notification of the book should be sent to all those Universities offering forensic science courses both here and in the US." -- Professor Brian Caddy (formerly professor of Forensic Science, University of Strathclyde)

Paul Millen's book is a straightforward, accessible introduction to the real world of forensics and crime scene investigation. Millen is a professional, in fact a founder of crime scene investigative qualifications, and this shows throughout the book. I am a university professor, and I use this book with my science and technical writing students--they have enjoyed the book and learned much from it--the book is an excellent example of scientific writing. Unlike the TV and movie versions, Millen writes from the perspective of one who's been there and experienced the shocking, the strange, the sad, the cruel, and even sometimes the humor of crimes. I appreciate the introduction to the sciences of forensics, written in a way that those of us who are not involved in forensics can understand the history, the science, and the technology involved in investigating tragic crimes. Millen invites the reader to explore the crime scenes with him, so that we can understand not only the investigation, but the human elements involved in each crime. Also, he writes in a way that potential jurors and witnesses could understand why and how a crime is investigated and in some cases, solved. I recommend this reading to anyone interested in forensics--you will be able to understand the reality of crimes that is so obviously missing in the media. This book delves into and explains what 30-second bites on CNN so sadly leave out. I highly recommend it --Professor JoAnne C. Juett (posted on Amazon US)

This book is a carefully-prepared account of one man's career in Crime Scene Investigation in England. As you read about his progress from a junior investigator to becoming a senior manager you get an insight into just how much hard work is involved in becoming the sort of all-rounder that we would all like to see in charge of the impartial preparation of evidence. It brings out the skills, dedication, knowledge and experience required to make the grade in this very special career.
The additional ingredient that you might not expect to find is the moral courage that is sometimes needed to continue in the pursuit of the truth when so many obstacles can crop up in your way.The best accolade that we can give this author is that his book reflects the same painstaking approach that he has obviously shown in his time in assisting and working with the police force. He is generous to his colleagues in both the civil service and the various police forces for whom he has worked. He has obviously been both a strong team member and efficient team leader.
As a complete outsider to his whole world I can only admire both his approach to the job and to his very successful attempt to convey this world to an ordinary member of the public.

I always knew that most if not all CSI shows on TV were either very unrealistic or a little far fetched. After reading this, even without hitting the first chapter all my views of the shows had changed. This book is a great insight into the workings of a Scenes Of Crime Officer (SOCO) through the ranks with case studies spanning over 3 decades.

A very interesting read that draws you into the world of Paul Millen, revealing real cases he or fellow SOCOs or detectives worked. The book is written in an easy to read language, well explained and provides an enjoyable read. A must have book for lovers of real CSI programes/cases!
