Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
After releasing two albums to less than positive critique, Crime of the Century, with the classic track "Dreamer", set Supertramp truly on the map. It also marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career for a band that originally came together through the "Musicians Wanted" section of an English newspaper. Combining the best of a myriad of musical styles, Supertramp, with its heavily keyboard-powered and sax-coloured progressive pop sound, forged a sound that few have ever come close to emulating. --Paul Clark

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloody well rite!, 14 April 2007

This is a great album, for all you so called 'Supertramp' fans who have only the anthology. Hang your heads in shame if you have not ventured out and tried the delights of the real Supertramp. don't get me wrong, with all prog groups, they get it wrong from time to trime. But you are pretty damn safe with this! Even in the quietest moments and Crisis what Crisis.
What wonderful songs and really great vocals. Also the use of sound effects only second to Pink Floyd.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true masterpiece!, 23 Sep 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Crime of the Century (Audio CD)
This is probably my all time favourite album, with every track worthy of five stars. From the commercial excellence of 'Dreamer' to the complex but magnificent 'Hide in your shell', and check out that fantastic instrumental segment in the climax to 'School', this album is one of the all-time greats. Unfortunately, because the band produced this masterpiece relatively early in their career, they always struggled, in my opinion, to reach the same heights in their subsequent work. On the other hand most artists never produce something this good. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Them were the days!, 10 Nov 2001

In about 1974 I saw Supertramp play the songs from Crime of the Century live at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester, then rushed out to buy the album. It was an introspective time, so tracks like Hide in your Shell fitted the mood like a glove.

Yes, we all believed the cure for pain was love!
School? Asylum!
Dreamer? Bloody well right!

Curious thing is, while life has moved on apace, I still play it to this day, especially the stunning climax to the title track. Imagine a simple, atmospheric piano and drum riff, overlaid first with bass, then shimmering, stirring strings, and finally in comes the sax solo, soaring over the top like a prayer before galloping away into the middle distance. Truly a dramatic and memorable ending to a prime piece of 70's nostalgia!
