CRIME BEAT: A MYSTERY NOVELLA

When John Moretz takes a job as a reporter in the Appalachian town of Sycamore Shade, a crime wave erupts that boosts circulation and leaves people uneasy. Then a murder victim is discovered, and Moretz is first on the scene.

As more bodies turn up, Moretz comes under police suspicion, but the newspaper's sales are booming due to his coverage of sensational crime. His editor is torn between calling off his newshound and cashing in on the attention, plus the editor is romancing the big-city reporter assigned to cover the suspected serial killer.

And Moretz seems to be one step ahead of the other reporters, the police, and even the killer himself.

CRIME BEAT is a 21,000-word novella, the equivalent of about 110 book pages. Also contains the bonus story "Do You Know Me Yet?" from HEAD CASES.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clever and witty 6 Mar 2011

"We both know things are never as they appear." ~ Crime Beat

A clever and witty story about a small town newspaper and the lengths some people will go to for a story. The intriguing plot, interesting characters, and priceless one-liners make for a compelling one-sitting read. Not only that, the twist in the tale caught me by surprise - the hallmark of a great mystery.

Crime Beat is the third Scott Nicholson book I've read. Each was so different in both style and voice, but all were terrific reads. Nicholson is one gifted storyteller.

Highly recommended.

This e-book was a short novella and didn't take me more than a few hours to read. One of the things I really enjoy about Nicholson's work is the detail he puts into his descriptions of the scene. As I was reading I could picture the newspaper office where John Moretz and his boss, Howard Nance worked.

I was surprised at how quickly I was pulled into this story, and although I didn't like the main characters very much, I'm pretty much sure I wasn't `meant' to like them! There were some very funny lines in there which had me laughing out loud. I do like Nicholson's sense of humour :D

The writing was very easy to read and flowed nicely, right through to the cunning little twist at the end! Not what I was expecting at all and I'm pretty sure I said `Oh! No way!' out loud. I really want to tell you what I thought was going on, but I can't because that would give too much away, so there's not a lot more I can say here without giving spoilers.

Definitely worth a read, especially if enjoy a good crime/mystery and you are looking for something quick to fill a few hours.

4.0 out of 5 stars Written with flair and expertise 19 Aug 2012

This is the first Scott Nicholson book I've ever read and I must say, it was pretty good. It wasn't wildly original and I mostly guessed the ending, but it was written with a certain flair, a dash of humour and proofread uncommonly well for an indie Kindle book. I'd give it a tiny bit over 4* out of 5.

The second shorter story included in this same Kindle eBook about a lunatic who thinks he is having his ideas ripped off by famous authors was arguably a better idea, but very short and realised slightly less well. I didn't enjoy it much at all, but if it had been maybe two or three times longer, with a bit of dialogue and thoughts from the shrink, it could've been much more amusing and thought-provoking. Still worth 3* on its own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable 18 July 2012

This is a novella which was available for free download.

It is very short but packs a bit of punch because it is quite well-written. The story is delivered in the first person by an editor who takes on a new journalist who seems to get to crime-scenes straight after several murders are committed. Nicholson has an easy writing style and a good sense of humour. There is no real complexity in the plot, despite a twist, but I'm not sure we should expect any anyway, given that this effectively is an extended short story.

I'll read more by Nicholson because he is able to engage well with his readers, even though he doesn't deliver a great deal of depth here.

First off this is not a Scott Nicholson horror story, being more a serial killer murder mystery, and I really enjoyed reading it. It's a short story, a tale of a sleepy small town newspaper newsroom, where you have the ageing Editor (who is jaded, been there, done that) and the new up and coming Reporter who is keen and eager to make his mark. As always with Scott Nicholson, the writing is fantastic with really great, believable characters and dialogue; the story being fast paced, packed with suspense making for compelling "unputdownable" reading. There is a very very good twist at the end, which I certainly never saw coming!

Scott Nicholson has proved with every book he releases that he can Write with a capital W, my only question is - why isn't he as well known as Stephen King or James Herbert, because he certainly deserves to be! Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crime Beat - enjoyable novella 14 Feb 2012

Really enjoyed this novella - just the right length for this story !

Nicholson leads you down a path and surprises you at the end with a nice little twist that I didn't see coming. I suppose in hindsight I should have realised that I was being led in a direction that was possibly not the only way things could turn out, but because the story is not drawn out, one doesn't get the time to reflect and realise all is not as it seems.

This is the first Scott Nicholson book I've read and I really enjoyed his sharp and witty writing. I have downloaded a few more of his books and look forward to enjoying them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crime Beat 27 Feb 2011

This was an excellent story with the suspense and mystery building throughout. The main character, Moretz's editor who narrates the story, is well drawn. He's cynical yet has a great sense of humor. Other major characters including Moretz remain just enough of an enigma to keep you guessing. Nicholson's writing is excellent blending dialogue, action, and narrative in the right proportions to keep the story moving and the reader engaged.

Some of the minor characters, especially the police chief, lean toward being caricatures. This in itself is not necessarily that bad, but it leaves very few viable suspects. Despite this I was still kept wondering whodunit.
