Normally I wouldn't post a review, particularly if it's negative. However, I feel somewhat duty-bound to ensure that the the overall "star" rating is more realistic. Let me start with the good.

The machine itself it rather good. It's fairly easy to set up and it looks nice. It cuts well (though it's always worth doing a "test" cut before putting in your expensive materials!). It even comes with a tutorial walk-though tutorial kit to make a thank you card.

It's here that Cricut starts to reveal its ugly side. The proprietary software that you are compelled to use is awful. It's intentionally limited to poor designs to encourage you to buy more, directly from them. You cannot import your own vector images (or any images at all, for that matter) and you are limited to the two (abysmal) fonts included with the software as you cannot use your own (though, of course, you are quite welcome to purchase more, from them, at a premium).

There used to be third-party software that didn't limit Cricut Mini users' creativity; however, Cricut stamped on those publishers hard and they no longer provide compatible software. Some might argue that Cricut have a policy of squeezing every penny from their customers to turn a profit and are willing to clamp down on any threat to that income; for a company espousing creativity and art, some might say Cricut appear to have double-standards when it comes to freedom to express them. However, seeing as they are strangers to litigation, I will merely say only that I think Cricut are quite a lot greedy.

I've wanted one of these since they came out and was so excited when I saw it on Amazon Black Friday sale. When I got it I found it very easy to set up however I found the results a bit disappointing, the cuts weren't clean and I didn't know what went wrong after following instructions so thought maybe I was just being dissolutioned about the results I was expecting. I ended up looking on blogs and they said it took a while to get use to the Cricut but then I saw someone saying about their blade not being sharp....I looked at my blade and compared it to pictures online and found my blade was actually broken, it had no tip! I realised that it must have happened on my second cut when I tried to cut a spike shape from 'Adorable Scoreable' card and found that other people has problems cutting this card damaging the blade so I'm definitely not going to be cutting that anymore.

After buying replacement blades I've had perfect results and can't recommend it enough.

I found when your mat gets less sticky it's best to get a brayer to ensure your cutting material is stuck properly.

We wanted a cutting machine which offered us a good range of fonts, patterns and designs without having to constantly buy additional things like you do with most hand cranked cutting/embossing machines.

We thought we had researched this product properly, looking on their website and believed we could make reasonable use of the machine over the coming years. However, after buying one and setting it up we discovered that virtually all the patterns, fonts and designs we had looked at on their website were only available after purchasing!

You only got a tiny proportion of very, very basic fonts and shapes. We felt mega disappointed.

Unfortunately we felt the website was very misleading. We also thought we would be able to use some of the shapes, fonts etc on our PC, or on the Internet. You cannot use anything not included with the machine or bought from their site.

All in all we just felt you paid between £99.99 - £130 for the machine. All in all, we would definitely NOT recommend this device. Unless you are happy to buy all the fonts, designs and patterns!

I got this on the Black Friday deals so the price was comparable to the Cuttlebug (which I have for embossing). I'd read the reviews here and on the internet so downloaded and had a play with the Craft Studio first. You can't cut on this machine without being connected to the Craft Studio which isn't an issue for me personally.

I quickly cut out my first project using the card supplied and had a try with other cardstock. It's not recommended for use with paper but I've found most scrapbook papers are fine on the thin cardstock setting. When using thicker cardstock it might be worth setting it to cut twice.

One you've had a go with the basic shapes available you can rent a bundle of virtual cartridges from Cricut.com which is around £10 for 30 days use (£200+ worth of cartridges).

I really need to buy a spatula for lifting delicate shapes - shame there wasn't a basic tool included in the pack.

Bought as a gift but it's of very limited use. You can do very basic cutting with it and everything else you have to pay for - want to make a Christmas card? You can design something really nice but when you go to cut it - you have to pay for the library images.

Not a problem if a one off fee, but if you want a Mickey Mouse image then you have to pay for the library (around £60 for the cartridge), if you want an easter egg, then guess what - another cartridge.....

Someone has got the right idea for marketing, but it's too expensive to actually use which is a shame as the unit was easy to set up (on a MacBook) and worked without messing around.

There is an annual subscription that you can buy for £70 that allows you to rent all the images (note rent, not own) in the library while your subscription is active. But guess what? It's not available in the UK (as of the time of the review).

I paid £89 for this machine, it's now £61 - but it's still rubbish value for money due to the constant payment required to actually produce anything more than a basic pattern (you can't make your own images either!)

Luckily, Amazon has a great returns policy, so this got swapped for a more expensive model but one that allows you to actually cut paper without breaking the bank.

The mini cutting machine is not recommended in any way at all - avoid!
