Book Description

21 Sep 2012

Fearsome Fred always took the new ball
He was lightning fast and ever so tall
He'd sprint to the crease with one final jump
He'd aim to hit the top of off stump...

Cricket Our Great Summer Game is the great way of introducing Cricket to children in a rhyming story. Two vibrant pictures and eight lines of rhyme explain the role of all the key players in a game of cricket, including opening batsmen, tailenders, fast bowlers, spinners and even the umpires, using the terminology of the great game.

Finished with a diagram of the pitch highlighting various fielding positions, explanations of how the batsmen can be dismissed and what the key umpire signals mean, this is a fun way of giving children a good understanding of the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ideal bed-time story to introduce cricket 8 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
At a time when state schools are losing their cricket grounds and coaching - and when children can't see our cricket stars on free to air TV - this book provides a superb bed-time story, with compelling illustrations, to introduce the magic of cricket to tomorrow's generation.

It's great that 10% of sales income will go to "Chance to Shine", the charity that is doing so much to re-engage schools with cricket.

First up, this is a great little book to introduce children to cricket and the author has done a great job in weaving terminology and more technical terms into the narrative (yorkers, stumpings, nicks, swing bowling).

My only reservations are that some of the rhymes are rather forced, and that if you read the book from end to end then it isn't really a story - and I think with a few tweaks, this could have been a story. The "ending" rather fizzles out and a final page to wrap it all up would have been welcome.

The illustrations are functional, but could do with a review for accuracy - the wicket keeper stumps the batsman without the ball in his gloves, which has confused my young lad no end.

Still, this is well worth picking up. My nearly-three year old loves it and has decided he wants to be Fearsome Fred the Fast Bowler and Graceful Graham the middle-order batsman, and if things work out to plan then I'll give the author VIP tickets to my boy's test debut.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cricket Our Great Summer Game 11 Jan 2013

Cricket Our Great Summer GameCricket - Our Great Summer Game is simply THE BEST children's book on CRICKET I have ever read.

In these times, with little exposure to cricket on terrestrial TV, there has never been a more urgent need to inspire the next generation to want to play cricket - and this wonderful book fulfils this need - but does so much more besides. As a cricketer myself, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book - cricket on the face of it, can be a complex game but the author has captured everything about what makes it so great in a way that can only be described as genius.

My son is 8 and has just started playing cricket and he loves the rhyming verse as well as the fantastic pictures, which are really bright and have inspired him to want to play the game. My daughter too loves the book and the characters in the story.

My son can read it alone and is gaining a deeper understanding of the cricketing terms used in the book - it works on several different levels - from the ages of 3 up to 10+, children will grow to understand our great game as they (hopefully) give it a go and try it out for themselves. You will find things to look at and talk through weeks, even years after you have bought it.

Once you have read this a few times, you will know it off by heart - great for subliminal learning.

I don't know anyone who has this book and doesn't love it - it is taking off by storm in our cricket club. Time to spread the word wider in the UK and beyond !

A true classic children's book.
Cricket Our Great Summer Game
Unreservedly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal children's sporting gift!! 2 Dec 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have never seen a gift like this before! A good guide to the rules and terminology of Cricket, ..... targetted at children (both boys and girls!)......... in verse! ..... in a fun way!

Should enable any adult (Dad or Mum!) to make a pretty good attempt at impressing in a cricket conversation!

Got to be a winner!
