Product Description

Synopsis

Cricinfo, the world's biggest cricket website, enjoys an unrivalled global presence. And after launching its own magazine in January, Cricinfo now adds an exciting new annual, "The Cricinfo Guide to International Cricket", which will be an essential annual handbook for all cricket-lovers. The Guide focuses exclusively on international cricket in all its guises - frenetic Twenty20s, one-day internationals and Test matches. These games captivate a television audience of tens of millions throughout the year and throughout the world. Published in November, at the beginning of international cricket's busiest time of year, the Guide is the ideal complement to the long-standing Spring bestsellers "Wisden" and "Playfair". In 2007, a busy cricket programme includes the ninth World Cup, held in the West Indies. "The Cricinfo Guide to International Cricket 2007" fills a gap left by "Wisden" and "Playfair" by giving detailed profiles of every player expected to appear on the international stage during the year. Every one of almost 200 featured players gets full-page treatment, containing a photograph and a career summary in words and statistics.

And to back up the profiles, there is also a quick-reference section of records compiled from Cricinfo's inexhaustible StatsGuru service.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yet another cricket guide, but it has value, 21 Mar 2007
By abn397 (India) - See all my reviews

Hard-core cricket fans probably get Wisden and the Playfair Annual every year. So is there any reason to buy this new offering?
It gives a one-page profile of every cricketer likely to play international cricket in 2007. It is based on data available in mid-Sep 2006 and perhaps a few persons not listed here will play in 2007. Apart from these, it has a comprehensive and up-to-date statistics section both for Tests and ODIs.
It is certainly useful for identifying the lesser-known players (and even better-known players of lesser-known teams). In view of the good performance of the "minnows" like Ireland future editions should cover some of the better minnows (at least Kenya and Ireland). The little-known facts about each player are a trivia-hunter's delight.
It is nice to see the same amount of space dedicated to, say , Munaf Patel and to Glenn McGrath although some may disagree with this.
Not too sure if this is worth bringing out as an annual as there might not be substantial changes from year to year. Perhaps it may be worthwhile every two years or to coincide with each World Cup.
(I am reviewing the edition which has M.S. Dhoni on the cover. I suspect that the other edition with Andrew Flintoff on the cover has the same content.)
I look forward to future editions of this, although many cricket fans may not feel the need to buy it every year as they do with Wisden and Playfair.
All told, it is an useful addition to any cricket fan's bookshelf.
