A `crewel' murder with a lot of potential suspects...,

The 8th rather festive book in the Needlecraft Mystery Series sees amateur sleuth and owner of Crewel World needlework store Betsy Devonshire back to her crime solving best- this time at a needlework fair in snowy Nashville, Tennessee. After a fellow store owner plunges to her death from the 9th floor of a hotel balcony, something in Betsy's mind just doesn't add up. After all, the balcony railing was high- it was fairly difficult to take a clumsy tumble... Betsy's *sure* that she was pushed; but how can she prove it? Aided by her friends Jill and Godwin, this is another crime away from home that Betsy is determined to solve...I have said in the past that I felt this series suffers somewhat when the books are taken away from adorable sounding Excelsior and the needlework store itself, not to mention the Monday Bunch, but am happy to report that this wasn't the case this time- mainly because the book was rescued by the presence of drama queen Goddy (my favourite character!) and the needlework fair was a far more interesting location than a rural retreat- as in one of the earlier books. The plot is also more fast-paced with three possible suspects and does keep the reader guessing a bit until the end. I'm still not really warming to Jill though, even after reading so many of these books- despite being a cop and Betsy's best friend, to me she is still a bit of a non-entity unfortunately. Despite that, I really enjoyed this light-hearted cosy crime. The mentions of needlework throughout have really encouraged me to give cross-stitch another shot, but you don't have to be a needle worker or a knitting fan to enjoy these books, believe me. If you like quirky characters, quick-witted sleuths and memorable settings then this is the series for you. I like to read this fun series between more `serious' books for a bit of escapism, and I would personally recommend reading these books in their intended order, just to get a real feel for who is who. Enjoy!

The sort of easy read you curl up with on a cold afternoon with a mug of coffee. The usual good read from Monica Ferris with Betty, Jill and Godwin working out who the murderer is. Well worth the read.
