Product Description

Ryan Black is living a life most men will never know- filled with high-risk adventure in exotic locales, an authentic hero who willingly confronts head-on the life and death challenges often found in emerging trouble spots around the globe. He is a man most women find intriguing- yet it is Cassandra, a rare woman possessing a unique combination of inner strength and beauty who dares to enter his life.

This high impact thriller takes you on a desperate mission to prevent a radiological attack on the United States by Jusef al Sudairy. From mysterious crashes of Soviet-era fighters in California to high-tech naval battles in the Atlantic, the action is nonstop in this first volume in the Ryan Black Series.

An Excerpt:

Chapter 1

"If the conquest of a great peak brings moments of exultation and bliss, which in the monotonous, materialistic existence of modern times nothing else can approach, it also presents great dangers. It is not the goal of grand alpinism to face peril, but it is one of the tests one must undergo to deserve the joy of rising for an instant above the state of crawling grubs."
Lionel Terray, 1965

THE WINGS OF THE BALD EAGLE rippled from the rising currents as he knifed through the sky high above the foothills of the Sierra range. Feeling the turbulent air of the thermals boiling off the sun-baked landscape, he instinctively banked into the uplifting arms of the air column and was pulled skyward toward the roof of the world. He was the perfect predator- master of all the territory that lay thousands of feet below. A reflection on the distant East face of Mt. Whitney attracted his attention but for a moment and he resumed his pursuit in the ageless dance of hunter and prey.

About the author: Zack Hamric lives in Sarasota, Fl and when he's not writing his next thriller can be often found in the Gulf sailing his classic sloop Dolce Vita. His next book BLANK SLATE is available on Amazon and he is currently working on another thriller based in Sorrrento, Italy.

More About the Author

Zack Hamric Bio

Zack Hamric grew up as the oldest in a family of four children in Memphis, Tn. He graduated from the University of Memphis with a degree in Political Science in 1980. The next couple of years he spent several months skiing many of the resorts in the West and through good fortune managed to survive a few winter mountaineering and climbing adventures along the way.

Life has a funny way of changing dreams, and for the next twenty years, most of his adventures were confined to raising a family with three children and traveling the country as a corporate citizen. Most Monday mornings would find him waiting in an airport buying the latest Tom Clancy or Lee Child novel. After reading thousands of geopolitical thrillers through the years, Zack turned his dream of writing a novel into a reality that was five years in the making and wrote the first in a series of Ryan Black novels, "Crescent Rising." His second novel, "Blank Slate" was released on Amazon Oct. 21.

These days, Zack can be found living in Sarasota, Fl. and on beautiful afternoons might be found sailing in the Gulf aboard his sloop Dolce Vita while creating new plotlines for his upcoming novel.

Storyline: It is a complex tale of international terror in which an off-the-radar operative name Ryan starts off serenely enough on a holiday, trying to rid himself of a ghost from his past by climbing the east face of Mount McKinley (a hair-raising endeavor worthy of a book all its own in my opinion). Just as he reaches the top and tries to relax, he is suddenly plunged back into the world of hi-tech, super secret intelligence operations when an unexpected visitor shows up on the summit with him.

The plot goes global ranging from California to the Middle East to the Arctic Coast of Russia as terrorists plan to carry out a super plot right under the noses of the United States government.

Only Ryan's personal happenstance romantic involvement with a beautiful woman who, along with her father, turns out to be victims of the terrorists' victims spurs him on to solve the crime before it happens.

Grammar/Spelling: Very well written. Very few grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors, if any, were noted.

Character Development: All of the characters with major parts and some with very minor parts in the story were extremely well-developed and believable. Backstory information and motivations were more than adequately presented throughout the book. Bad guys and good guys both had believable reasons for doing what they were doing. The actions of the characters clearly displayed the dangerous world of terrorism and counter-terrorism and the reason why so many innocent bystanders are often caught up in the ruthless business on both ends.

Writing Style: Mr. Hamrick is very colorful and descriptive in all areas of the work from romantic scenes to brutal murders.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Creative Read 8 Dec 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
I am impressed with Hamric's writing ability and his storyline. As is the case with thrillers, someone must save the world from impending disaster. It is hard to consistently make this scenario enticing and readable, but Zach Hamric has done a good job. Some of the surrounding characters could have been more fully developed to strengthen their presence, but all in all, the cast of characters was well done.

I would have given five stars except for the need for better editing. Once this story has been reviewed and further edited to comply with standard publishing criteria, it will indeed be an excellent addition to the thriller market.

3.0 out of 5 stars Possibly more of a man's read 22 Jun 2013

The book started well with intrigue and mystery however, for my liking it did become a bit too technical with regards to weapons and aircraft etc. Won't be looking for this author's titles in future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Techno Thrill Ride 29 Mar 2011

What a pleasant surprise. Easy reading with some great characters. Fleming meets Clancy. Not a deep or complex classic just a thorughly good read. A forward button pusher (page turner). I enjoyed this book for what it was. Not in the least pretentious just a fast paced thiller. I can certainly recomend it. I am not sure how much of the technology exists but it cannot be far off. It was certainly believeable. The plot was current and believable enough to be chilling. Read this and look for the next in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Scary! 19 July 2010
By Brendan Carroll - Published on Amazon.com

Crescent Rising is one of those action-packed novels that leave the reader breathless and wondering what will happen next. The action, plot and premise are very relevant to the state of world politics as they stand in the USA today. Zack Hamric's portrayal of the workings of the terrorist mindset and methods of operation give the reader a rare opportunity to delve inside the minds of the lunatic factions threatening our very existence. His knowledge of weaponry, delivery systems, military operations is astonishing and the visual portrait that he paints of special operations and the malevolent intentions inherent with the terrorist community and found within the borders of our own country is both amazing and disturbing. The story flows from point A to point B with very little, if any, distraction, clearly defining the characters, their missions and their personalities along the way with some very interesting and entertaining glimpses into the lifestyles of the rich and infamous. I am left hoping that we may have such men as Ryan Black and his cronies out there somewhere looking out for us all. Excellent job, Mr. Hamric!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read 17 Aug 2010

A mix of Cussler, Clancy and Flynn, but with a style and feel all it's own and a great book that has an all too plausible scenario. The characters are appealing and scenario could easily play out in today's world. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down 10 Aug 2010

If you like Vince Flynn, Brad Thor type of thrillers, you're going to love this book! Once you start reading though, you won't be able to put it down. Ryan Black and associates are a combination of Mitch Rapp, Scot Harvarth, Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino (of earlier Clive Cussler novels). This is a great read, the premise of which is all too real.

I look forward to a sequel, as there are a few unanswered questions at the end, but all in all, it's an exciting, can't stop reading thrill.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kept me reading. 20 Mar 2011

I like adventure books.
I got this for the Kindle and enjoyed it with a couple of criticisms.
Doesn't anyone proof read these? Is that why the Kindle (sometimes) gets great prices?
Case in point:
1. about 1/8 of the way in he's explaining the relationships of the characters and says
that "they've fought together on twelve continents." Say what? What planet is that?
2. Later, the officer orders his men to drop everything but their weapons, as they're close to the enemy.
In the next paragraph, he describes how tough it is to run through the forest with all the packs and heavy gear on.
3. Finally, the target ship is heading to New York in the Atlantic ocean. "Sir, they're two hundred miles off the coast heading due EAST." Hello, New York is west!
4. Why is the Chinese missile always called the "seekworm"?

However, for the money, it was a good read, not Tom Clancy, but a good page turner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crescent Rising is a rising star among techno-thrillers. 2 Dec 2010

Writing Style: Mr. Hamrick is very colorful and descriptive in all areas of the work from romantic scenes to brutal murders. His characters interact easily with each other like old friends and/or professional associates should. He displays extensive knowledge of nautical subjects and employs them with great skill, explaining things that ordinary people might not normally understand or even think about. He also takes the reader on an odyssey of activities from manning a super-surveillance attack boat to climbing a sheer rock face to operating a rust-bucket tug in Russian waters.

Continuity: I did not notice anything out of sequence or unbelievable as far as timeframe or continuity.

Overall Rating: 5-
The story was energetic, fast-paced and interesting. A surprisingly understandable techno-thriller with overtones of romance on the back burner. My only complaints, if you can call them complaints or simply preferences, is that some of the good guys seemed a bit over the top and James Bond-like, bigger than life and their names matched them. I personally would have liked to see a bit more of their 'feminine sides'. Ha! I can say that because I'm a girl! What I mean is that I like a little more sensitivity and less brawn in my heroes, but I understand that the majority of techno-thriller fans are male and so they might not agree. Great book.

Some sexual content, violence, graphic language.
