Book Description

Kristina knows he exists. She witnessed his supernatural strength when he saved her life and his sorrow when he failed to save her mother. She knows he watches over her from a distance. And she will do whatever it takes to get his attention, even throw herself off the highest bridge in Boston to force him out of the shadows.

Derrick is one of the creatus, created beings who have been on earth more than four thousand years. Many questions surround the origin of these sentient beings who are stronger than humans, eat differently, and live longer. But they were created just as we were, maybe even before us. It is from them we obtain our fairy tales--and our nightmares. They are the reason we believe in superheroes--and monsters. Because...they exist.

In the past, they kept the human race safe from an anonymous distance. But now Derrick must come out of the darkness to save a woman he has no business loving, even if doing so may threaten his entire race.

The Creatus Series is not your normal paranormal's a realistic romantic mystery based on the myths you've heard your entire life. Prepare to believe...

Note: If you haven't read the prequel novella, CREATUS (They Exist), I recommend that you download it first. It doesn't give away any secrets of the creatus series, but it sets the stage for what's to come, and you will have a better understanding of the characters' actions in Creatus. The events in Creatus (They Exist) start fourteen years prior to the events in Creatus. Only the last chapter and first chapter overlap, and they are from a different point of view. Happy reading!

More About the Author

A romantic-suspense writer, my stories overflow with romance, mystery, suspense, a hint of paranormal sometimes, and of course, tragedy. After all, what would a great story be without a tragic event setting the stage? All of my novels are sensual, but not erotic, gripping but not graphic and will make you cry, laugh, love, and hope. Although some of my titles clearly include supernatural or ghostly beings, my writing dances on the edge of the paranormal, in a genre referred to as magical realism. My hope is that as you read my stories, you'll wonder, "Hmmm...what if?"

As most authors, I blame my leap into a full-time career as a professional writer on my love of reading. Reading has always been an escape for me. When life was rough as a child, I could always disappear into a book. But I found something else too... I discovered that writing out my thoughts was healing. Not only could I create hope for my protagonists, but I could do away with the antagonists--legally.

When I penned my first novel, 'She Belongs to Me', I allowed only my cousin and best friend to read it. They are the reason I write. They pushed me to publish, as they felt my stories would give others who've experienced tragedies hope. So now, even though I still write for me, I mainly write for my readers who continually encourage me that my words touched their soul.

Most of my novels share some of my favorite hobbies, mostly, anything to do with the great outdoors. I rarely spend my days off at a movie theatre or the mall. In fact, I hate shopping, and my hubby would prefer to do anything other than take me to a movie that I'd already read the book. :) Also, we both would rather read a book on the beach--or a coffee shop if it's raining--and if the weather is really nice, we love to go kayaking and hiking.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this well-written paranormal/romance... 22 Mar. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have had this book on my kindle for sometime. Once I started reading I found I could not put it down! I absolutely love the relationship between Kristine and Derrick. Derrick is a Creatus and Kristine is human, the two species rarely come together. However, Derrick, has been watching over Kristina all of her life and silently protecting her from harm. I do not like spoilers so I will not reveal the outcome of the story, but trust me it's fantastic. This paranormal romance was beautifully written and well executed and could rival all the big names in the business in my humble opinion.
The love between the two main characters is breathtakingly beautiful and makes you gasp with pure delight at the innocence of true love. I highly recommend this wonderful and suspense-filled story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good read 4 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
After reading the prequel, I knew I would have to know what happens I bought the box set and have just finished this installment.

This is a very well written story, an intriguing relationship between a troubled human and a creatus...strong, caring and one who wants humans to be safe, at the same time as keeping his 'kind' out of the public eye, understanding the dangers of being different. However, nothing in life runs smoothly.

I don't normally read romances but this one interested me because of its difference and it is written so well in form and style, flowing effortlessly from one page to the next.

Not one to give spoilers, I will say that this series is well worth reading.

Carmen DeSousa. 1st in the series
This is a well written book as you would expect from Carmen DeSousa. It is a romantic story with a lot of suspense thrown in as well. This first book has set up for more to follow, the characters are very strong with a good blend of supernatural and romance.
A very good read and if this type of book is your thing then you will enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting take on fairy tales 2 Sept. 2013
By Ashley Fontainne - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
Ever wonder where the ancient ideas of supernatural creatures came from? How did the legends of beings among us who posses extraordinary strength and longevity begin? In this latest novel by Carmen DeSousa, those questions are answered in a very unique and interesting way.

One young woman, tormented by tragic events in her past, is about to be introduced to a world she never knew existed. A group of people who are the root of our fairy tales...and nightmares.

As you follow alongside Kris and her new romance with Derrick, one of the Creatus, you are mesmerized by the style and pace of the story. Full of romance, intrigue, suspense and the paranormal, this truly unique story will keep you glued to the pages as Kris and Derrick struggle with their relationship and all the problems that arise when an outsider is brought into the Creatus fold.

As Kris becomes a member, she soon discovers that, along with the good, comes evil. And not everyone is happy with her inclusion into their secret world.

A great read for anyone and a book I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A different kind of romance/mystery/suspense/thriller! 3 Sept. 2013
By Linda S. Prather - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I always try to be honest in my reviews, and in the past 6 months to a year I have become online friends with the author. Otherwise I would probably never have picked up this book to read, as it isn't a genre I normally enjoy. I'm more mystery/suspense/thriller. I'm so glad I did. This book could easily classify itself as romance/mystery/suspense/thriller. An amazing read that keep me going, and feeling my heart sink when I reached the 90% on my Kindle because I never wanted it to end.

I'm not a big Twilight fan, but I did enjoy the first movie, although I didn't care for the actors. I found Creatus reminding me somewhat of Twilight, but with actors I loved. I truly enjoyed getting to know Derrick and Kris. Although the book has many characters I never found myself lost or having to go back to read something to see who someone was. Well written, with well developed characters.

Imagine knowing there is only one person in the world for you and without that person you are destined to live out your life in loneliness. Derrick found the love of his life when she was only eight years old. So he waited, and he watched over her, helpless to battle her self-destruction, but knowing if she died, he would die of a broken heart. A fateful moment as Kris, unable to stand the loneliness of her life, and wanting to see her "Dark Angel", decides to take matters into her own hands and attempts suicide. This moment begins a roller coaster ride of love, betrayal, and a plot to destroy mankind. Can Derrick save the woman he loves without destroying his own family?

Highly recommended to readers of all genres.

3.0 out of 5 stars eye-catching cover, Interesting premise, lackluster execution, whiny heroine 5 Feb. 2014
By Corrinthia - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When the book started off with a six page monologue by the heroine about how crappy she's made her life before she proceeds to throw herself off a bridge to get the hot-guy/paranormal heart-throb/stalker's attention, I almost stopped reading. The promises made in the premise and some of the unique elements kept me reading. Though the writing is good and there are some wonderful stylistic elements, I could never get a grasp on why Derrick was so enamored with Kris. There are some good twists, however, and interesting world-building. I just couldn't get a connection to the characters or really care about what happened to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to put down once it gets rolling! 5 Mar. 2014
By Lornwal - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
CREATUS by Carmen DeSousa is well-written, imaginative, and suspenseful, with appealing supernatural (and human) characters, all of whom have all-too-human flaws. The beginning of the story requires a bit of patience, but the story quickly kicks into high gear and becomes a real page-turner. CREATUS is more than just a paranormal roller coaster ride, though. It has real heart, and the characters face as much emotional peril as physical danger.

I enjoyed the wish-fulfillment aspect of a superhuman race committed not just to coexisting with humans, but to protecting them as well. Of course, something has to go wrong, and when it rains, it pours. But, as with all powers, the greatest is love, and in CREATUS, it is both heartwarming and passionate.

I'm not a fan of cliffhanger endings, so its non-ending is my only real quibble with CREATUS. Still, the TWILIGHT books and Sookie Stackhouse novels use the same technique. It certainly keeps readers hungry for more!

2.0 out of 5 stars So disappointed! 16 Oct. 2013
By Siadina - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really, really wanted to like this book, and decided to get it based on the reviews. I''m thinking at this point that most of the reviews must have been solicited, because they don't reflect the book I've been reading. Made it halfway through and couldn't continue.

The main characters, Kris and Derrick, are horribly one dimensional and you feel no connection to them whatsoever. Their sudden, soulmate relationship is forced and flat. The whole damsel in distress 'I'm going to throw myself off a bridge to get his attention' thing, just doesn't work, especially when the author then tries to convince us that this girl is so strong and so smart and so independent, just by saying it repeatedly.

The idea of the creatus is a bit new, but not enough to counter the rehashed ideas of vampire/superhero/angel in the plot. Halfway though a good book, I'm usually checking Amazon for the sequel, but there's nothing here to make me want to finish reading this one, let alone a series!
