5.0 out of 5 stars As fresh as when it was made., 15 Sep 2003
By N. Ohtsubo "Peter Jackson" (Japan) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It is one of the most charming television series ever made. It can truely be said to be a timeless classic. The image and audio quality suffers from time to time (it was made in the 70s), but the stories and acting make up for any technical limitations. No additional features. Breaking the series into two boxed sets is a little annoying, but better than what happened to the VHS release.

5.0 out of 5 stars All Time Classic, 15 Oct 2005
By Mark Antony Pearson (Tywyn, Gwynedd United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Based on the books of James Herriot, this is series one of the classic TV adaption. The series tells the story of newly qualified Scottish vet Herriot (Christopher Timothy) travelling to Yorkshire, to secure a job of assistant vet to Seigfried Farnhan (Robert Hardy) This first series tells how James gets the job, his first tentative steps in the practice, his courtship, and subsequent marriage to local girl Helen Alderton (Carol Drinkwater) and his first meeting with the youthful and philandering Brother of Siegfried, Tristan (Peter Davison)

Also in series one, this disc set being the first of two parts, Sigfrieds exasperation over his Brothers failiure to qualify, his hilarious attempts to organise the practise by employing a secretary, the dragon like Winnifrid Harbottle!

The story of the vets unfolds against the impending world war two, often bringing into play nostalgic elements, like listening to Lamplight the wireless in the sitting room, cosy fireside chats, and mealtime cnversations, making the audience often appreciate the joy of home cooking, and the companionship of good friends and family.

James dedication to his work is at times, in the opinion of his partners, bordering on the obsessive... Also shining through is his innate caring attitude towards the community he has grown to love. But it is the towering performence of Robert Hardy as Siegfried, and his psychological battles with his Brother Tristan, which went a long way to making this series the gem that is is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage - seems to have improved with age., 17 May 2005
By A Customer
Don't know what the viewing figures were when this came out in the seventies but it seemed at the time that everyone was watching it. Could recall the programme contained shots of beautiful Yorkshire countryside but as an adult I am enjoying it all the more, it is just such fun to watch, plenty of humour, rich characterisations and wonderful acting. Robert Hardy's portrayal of Siegfried is electric - he positively sparkles with energy.

Very suitable for family viewing. The PG rating must be for the operating scenes and for the occasional bit of bad language but there is nothing crude or rude about this series, and no F words! Hoorah. Some of today's producers need to put this on and learn.

Has default subtitles which can be switched off. We have bought up to the end of the second series, beyond that not sure if the series has been committed to DVD yet but even if that is all you can get in the UK, it is worth it. We hope that the third series will appear on DVD soon.
