Having spent a long time researching MP3 players, & reading other reviews, there was a lot of expectation upon the little box of tricks when it arrived. I must say that I'm not disappointed with my choice.
Being a confirmed gadgeteer, I was sorely tempted by the Ipod. After all, it must be good if it is the top selling MP3 player in the world. BUT - why be like the rest of the crowd? Okay, Creative may have taken a few leads from Apple (touchpad, white headphones etc), but they seem to have made a product which has evolved the concept. There are no worries over what happens in a year or 2 when the battery life ends, you can have a spare battery to swap if you're not near a charger, there's a built in radio, it has it's own style. All things that make it that little bit better.
The little Zen is actually very cool to look at & hold. Not that it really matters, when we're considering a music player. Okay, maybe a little, but the main thing is that it sounds good. The headphones are a little big for my ears, but sound quality is not a problem. The player handles a wide range of music styles with ease, but you can also change the settings to make the most of Rock/Jazz etc by using presets, or by changing the settings yourself.
The battery life is perfectly acceptable, and I feel comforted by the fact that it is removable (unlike the Ipod's). The added bonus is that if the limited edition is still available, you get a 2nd battery free.
5 gig drive may seem measly compared to the 20s & 40s on the market, but unless you want to have yours & your neighbours entire music collections in your pocket, 5 is enough. When I was looking at my CDs to decide what to rip I found that I really didn't want to listen to half of it.

The micro is better in every way than an ipod...
1.Battery life is 12 hours.. but the zens battery is removable and you get an extra battery (therfore 24 hours) so no need to wait for it to charge.. just insert the second battery!! :)
2.Zen micros are cheaper than Ipod mini's....
3.The micro has an FM radio with 32 presets and an autoscan function! :) Ipod mini's don't.
4.Micro has a 5GB capacity...the ipod mini only has 4GB!
and ipod mini's only hold 1000 songs.. this baby holds 2500!!!
5.It also plays WMA files as well as mp3 files unlike the ipod.
6.Zen micro is smaller!!
7.Better looking!!
8.It comes with a pouch and case with a belt clip and stand!
9.The buttons are also touch sensitive! :)
10.The earphones are also more reliable as the ipod earphones always fall apart or break.
11.The sound quality is a lot better than an ipod!
12.And to put the icing on the cake... when the zen is charging the lights pulse which looks really cool! :)
SO WHAT AM TRYING TO SAY IS THAT THE CREATIVE ZEN MICRO IS THE WINNER!!:)
Hope that was helpful!

Unlike most people who have to choose between the iPod Mini and the Creative Zen Micro, I was limited by my PC which runs Windows Me so the Apple player was never in the running. However I don't feel like I've been forced into buying second best. The Creative player is excellent value.
Aesthetically it's beautiful; I have the white version (chosen because the back of all players is white) and the blue edge/backlight really make it eye catching. The touchpad does take some getting used to, like the other reviewers I would recommend turning down the senstivity straight away, but within an hour or so I had it sussed and now I find it simplicity itself.
The PC software was a little more confusing. I gave up at first and used Windows Media Player instead but when I figured out the bundled software it does indeed work at about a track per second transfer which is excellent.
The only reason that I didn't give 5 stars is that twice now (in less than a week) the player has frozen and the only way to get it to work was to pull out the battery and put it back, thereby restarting the player. Annoying, but not a fatal flaw.
As for the extras: the headphones are ok, standard freebie fare, the stand/belt clip is a neat idea although is rather bulky. I will also reiterate what others have said regarding the radio. I have only been able to pick up Radio 1 & 2 and my local BBC station and even then with intermittant clarity. The recording ability is nifty though!
So far I have nearly 700 tracks saved (mostly 128kb WMA files) and thats used about half the memory. I am not convinced about the 12 hour battery life but haven't done a proper test yet.
All in all a good buy. I love my Zen.

Am well impressed with this, like everyone else it was a choice between the zen and the pod. I definately made the right choice. It is smaller, looks cooler, has a radio, and the battery life is longer than the pod, AND you get a stand which doubles up as a clip!!! all the extras count.
The only reason i gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because we had probs loading up the CD-Rom on to our computer, we eventually got there by downloading the micro Zen software straight off the creative website, was easy peasey plus you can guarantee this is the most up to date version. The instructions are not that detailed so again go on their website and you can see a more detailed manual.
Loving my new zen.
