Better than expected, 11 May 2008
This review is from: Creative ZEN 32GB MP3 Player (Electronics)
I recieved my player just two days ago and it exceeds my expectations. Firstly it is smaller than any of the images lead you to believe. I am upgrading from a zen neeon (see creative singapore) and was worried that i was sacrificing size for storage but side by side there is little difference.
Secondly, other reviews had led me to believe that nothing could be achieved without using the creative software. However this fear was also unfounded as i was able to sync my music library and numerous audiobooks very easily using windows media player. I have since installed the software which is useful to easily create playlists.
The menus are very simple to navigate. I found them easier than those of the sony walkman which I recently returned simply due to storage limits.
The sound quality seems excellent using seinheisers in ear phones.
I would cetainly recommend this player for music and audio books (the book mark feature in especially good). I have yet to try the video feature but the screen is good, better that the sony or ipod nano.

Creative do it again; simple, clever little gadget!, 7 July 2008
This review is from: Creative ZEN 32GB MP3 Player (Electronics)
Firstly, a little about myself - I am in my early twenties and have been a MP3 player user since the days of 15gb bricks with pixelated lcd displays. I have never, and will never, own an Ipod. I have used them, respect their market dominance, respect the quality of the build and also respect their "general" ease of use. My needs however require a slightly less limiting software - or rather - in an ideal world, the freedom to not use software. Another thing to note is that I have owned both Sony and Samsung MP3 players - the Samsung was especially good. I am not a "creative fanboy".
This latest offering from Creative - the first 32gb flash memory based MP3 player in the world - is EXCELLENT. The size is compact, yet retaining a screen size which is admirable and sufficient to watch videos on. The battery life is excellent - a rare example of the manufacturing not exaggerating the life of their product's battery. The screen, as I mentioned, is large enough to enjoy videos and the quality is more than impressive with no noticable slow down on even the most explosive action scenes. The build quality is excellent, though I think the buttons are a smidge sub par of what I expect from creative, but I really am nit-picking there. The expansion feature is a dubious blessing - great for videos and pictures - but questionable for music as, like other people have mentioned, it does not sync with the internal memory. I have a 16gb sdhc in it which has room for no less than roughly 40 2hr+ films!
As usual, contrary to one existing review, no software is required to use the Zen - which is great. One thing to note is that a simple convertor is required to use videos on the zen but i can forgive this as the program is quick, simple and reliable.
Overall I consider this Creative's best yet. Certainly the best compromise between an MP3 player and a more cumbersome multimedia player. I am very pleased with it and strongly believe that most people would be too. One note, buy an i-nique screen protector, apply it carefully, and your zen with remain good as new. Why pay £150 and not protect it's most precious feature?
Good job creative, you've successfully earned my £150, money well spent too!

Great little gadget and particularly so for the price, 3 July 2008
This review is from: Creative ZEN 32GB MP3 Player (Electronics)
Until recently I had been using an 8GB Sansa E200 from Sandisk and had been very happy with that, minor software problems aside. I was tempted across to the Creative ZEN 32GB player due mostly to the sheer size of the memory and also through the ability to add storage in SDHC format and also the built-in FM radio...and have been extremely happy with it.
It is extremely simple and intuitive to use for both the menu and also the ability to work well with Windows Media Player (which the Sandisk never quite behaved with). It looks very good and has an excellent screen quality. The sound quality is very, very good and shows no distortion at all when cranked right up or when any of the custom equalizer settings are set up to max 12.
I did have a bit of an issue with the claimed 25 hour battery life on my first unit and a test showed that it was definitely only 10-12 at best. Fortunately a friend had one too and he was getting a very long life and thus I was happy to returm it for a prompt replacement unit.
There are a couple of things that could be a tiny bit better...
-- The FM radio reception is pretty weak. I can pick up nearly nothing out in the countryside and pretty fuzzy signals even in the centre of Edinburgh.
-- The SDHC storage is annoyingly separate from the 32GB and can only be played by direct track selection by manual searches in the folder structure. That's not too bad if you intend to for example store all of your music on the 32GB and then your photos on the SDHC. It's pretty naff though if you expect to be able to do something even basic like shuffle-play on any music you've put there. By way of comparison, the Sandisk was brilliant in its integration of the 2GB micro-SD card although at the cost of a 30 second "refresh database" at every startup. You'd think that the ZEN folk could have done a bit better considering the quality of the rest of the offering.
-- The volume levels are pretty good but it could be a little louder (OK...I do understand about health and safety concerns..). You can get pretty decent volume with the volume limiter turned to the max and a bit more of a boost by cunning use of the custom equalizer. The saving grace is that when you do put the volume up to the 24 or 25 max that you sometimes need to then you get no distortion.
-- The video conversion issue is a pain for anybody that wants to do the video thing...but I don't so no issues there.
All in all, this product is a very good little item and I'd recommend it to anybody compared to anything else I've owned or ever tried out....particularly at the price (which seems to be rapidly dropping).
