This is the course book for the top level A363 Advanced Creative Writing at the Open University. The course, and therefore course book, is a follow on from Creative Writing.

This book as split into three sections.

1. The first part starts with an introduction to genre (fiction/poetry/drama) and the sub-genres therein (romance, mystery etc). It then moves into detail about how to create and identify different kinds of conflict and contrast- not just in characters but language and scenes. The next chapter is about revision, but the book Revision: A Creative Approach to Writing and Rewriting Fiction is much much better at giving you what you need to know about this.

2. The second part is about stage plays, films and radio plays. The first few chapters of this are primarily about stage plays, though it has information important to story telling in any medium, like hints on how to give exposition and when it's not needed. It gives you the layout of a stage script, as well as making you think about the impact of the layout of the stage. I wasn't impressed with this section, having already read The Crafty Art of Playmaking and The Playwright's Guidebook, and found those books to have much more relevance to play writers. There's one chapter on radio plays, but you are definitely better off getting a specialist book on this, or checking out the BBC Writersroom if you want to write for radio.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but.... 3 Sep 2009
This book is the course book for the Open University's Advanced Creative Writing course; as such it has to cover the range of topics in that course, including short story writing, screen writing, writing for radio and a brief glance at poetry. If you wish to concentrate on one genre then there are better, more specialised books around, e.g Writing for Radio: A Practical Guide and Writing for Radio) How to Write for Television: A Guide to Writing and Selling Successful TV Scripts], and for screen writing (not my field) many on the OU course recommended Story: Substance, Structure, Style and the Principles of Screenwriting. (These other titles have the advantage of making no mention of Derek Neale's story 'Violin Lessons', a story of which I became heartily sick as the course progressed.)
For anyone doing the OU course hoping to get a headstart (the book is included in the course materials sent to students) or those wondering if it's worth shelling out the extra money for the OU tuition and peer support, it might be worth buying, and also anyone who doesn't really know what genre they would feel most comfortable in, but for others it would probably be better to buy a more specialised book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book 14 Aug 2012

This book covers so much about writing that you won't find together in this format in any other book on the subject. I am not an OU student and have learned a lot of skills from working through this excellent book....in particular, how one type of writing affects another, how all types of writing can learn from each other's techniques. It does exactly what it says in the title....and how!

5.0 out of 5 stars Food for thought 2 Nov 2011
A very clear and practical guide which I have used to supplement and sometimes to replace the work done in the writing classes I have attended. I have no adverse comments to make except that when the book was delivered part of an order of 2 books) I was not at home. The courier, Yodel, put the parcel into the dustbin; not even the recycling bin,not yet the green box with glass and tins; it was flung straight into the household waste bin.
Examining the thought processes of one who thinks this a suitable solution to the problem of where to leave a parcel for safekeeping has provided me with material enough for several creative writing classes.
