5.0 out of 5 stars A seriously useful book on the subject 1 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a book which 'does what it says on the tin'. As someone who values creativity in both professional life (running brainstorming sessions, etc) and with regard to some artistic hobbies, I thought this might be useful, and it is. I've had mixed experiences with the 'for dummies' series in the past, but this is one area where a book really can be a valuable source and inspiration. The author clearly knows his area well and the book is written in an inviting, easy going tone, with nunerous examples, a fair dash of humour and some interesting historical anecdotes.
I was already familiar with some of the techniques, but by no means the vast array of creativity inducing approaches and techniques outlined here. The background and psychology behind various approaches is outlined, as well as (as one would expect) practical tools that can help unlock doors when one is involved in a ceative task (my main reason for buying it). There are also suggestions for further reading.
In addition to looking at ways of enhancing one's creativity when involved in a specific individual or group task, I was particularly struck by the suggestion that one can learn to have a creative approach to life per se (in the chapter on 'embedding creativity in your personal life'); on reflection an obvious idea, but one I hadn't considered before.
Overall, whether you are looking for an encyclopedic reference book on creativity, a ready handbook or just something to dip in to now and then for inspiration, this book should work at every level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bringing common sense to creativity 18 Jan 2013
In my experience the 'gurus' have tended to make creativity rather inaccessible. They made it over-complicated! At last, a book on this subject that brought it to life! Techniques that I already new were given a new lease of life, with many addtional ideas that are readily applicable in a wide range of personal and business situations. This book has been written in a very readable style and is particularly attractive because it is possible to open it at any point and immediately connect with the material. Suddenly a book about creative thinking becomes a companion, as opposed to some weighty tome that I can only learn from by wading through from cover to cover. As ever the practical "Dummies" design and stories that bring the subject matter to life make for a thoroughly useful addition to anyone's library.

Content rich, brilliantly weaved together, making it a must-have book.

David's writing is easy to consume, blending his incredible experience and thinking with his cheeky wit!
Get in on your reading list and there it may stay as a permanent reference manual.

The book I read to research this post was Creative Thinking For Dummies which is a very good book which I bought from kindle. This book is about developing your creativity to help with problem solving and to in general come up with good ideas. It uses techniques like mind mapping and it does say to become truly competent at being creative takes 3 years of spending most of the day practicing being creative which is a similar amount of time to learning a musical instrument. Bill Gates the boss at Microsoft apparently frequently uses mind mapping to solve his problems. Apparently Boeing built a 25 foot wide mind map as a construction manual to one of the aircraft they were developing and saved $11 million. Mind mapping is using a picture in the centre that represents the topic and having interrelated branches going out showing how everything in the mind map relates to one another. I'd recommend reading mind mapping for dummies to learn this subject. The human brain thinks in terms of relationships and in most people vision is their predominent sense. I enjoyed reading this book which probably isn't going to make you a creative guru but is well written and will probably help you appreciate your own creativity and realise you are more creative than you realised and trust your abilities more. It also looks at lateral thinking and encourages you to accept bad ideas as part of the thinking process as without these good ideas wouldn't emerge. In many countries with totalitarian regimes creativity and art are discouraged and people are expected to become another cog in the wheel. Just look at Leonardo da Vinci and Thomas Edison to see how important creativity is. Edison famously said creativity is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. It is important that you trust any good ideas you have and follow through in acting on them. I would recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars This seems to be a good book. 31 May 2013
By Alfonso
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I believe 4 stars is what this book deserves. I like the way the book is presented in terms of its content, helpful tips and exercises to increase creativity etc. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to be creative whether it's in business, music, art and especially to people like me who are coming from a Chemistry background; Science is generally methodical and rational but when it comes to interpreting experimental results, that is when imagination is key as there are so many variables and possibilities that have to be considered, an aspect of Chemistry which I generally am not very skilled at apart from learning the theory. This book is great for people who are too left-brained and in need of balance.
