Product Description

Product Description

It is no easy task to find a teaching technique that can truly change the course of a child with special needs. Thirty years ago, when Janet Tubbs began working with children who had low self-esteem and behaviour problems, she developed a successful programme using art, music and movement. Believing that unconventional children required unconventional therapies, she then took her programme one step further - she applied it to children with Autism, AD/HD and Asperger's Syndrome. Her innovative methods and strategies not only worked, but actually defied the experts. In this new book, Janet Tubbs has put together a powerful teaching tool to help parents, therapists and teachers work with their children. The book is divided into four parts. Part One begins by introducing and explaining Janet's novel approach to teaching. Her goal is to balance the child's body, mind, and spirit through proven techniques. The next three parts provide a wide variety of exercises, activities and games that are both fun and effective. Each is designed to reduce hyperactivity, increase and prolong focus, decrease anger, develop fine motor skills or improve social and verbal skills. All are part of a programme created to help these children relate to their environment without fear, anxiety or discomfort. Just because a child may appear stubborn and difficult, doesn't mean that the child isn't intelligent, curious or creative. With the right approach, such a child can be reached, taught and, hopefully, started on the road to improvement. The daily lessons provided in this book may be just what you and your child have been waiting for.

There are plenty of ideas, actities and games to help "connect" with unconventional children.

Shame that there are no visual illustrations for the exercises, also I would have preferred that section Two was extended, purely because I am already familiar with the majority of the information in section one (I've read so many books). Apart from that, I can highly recommend this excellent knowledgeable and useful book, you'll not be disappointed.

I got this book to help me during a work placment in a school with genrally non-verbal autistic children, I've already learnt so much and i haven't even read all of it yet! It is set out a bit like a text book which can be a little off putting but it doesn't read like a text book, it's much more 'down to earth' than that. The information in chapter two and the acivitys at the end of the book are very interesting, there is an alful lot of infomation in this book the first half of the book although interesting has nothing to do with creative thrapys and is all about what Autism is, although interesting, for me this was unnessary infomation as I to have already read so many books on Autism. The advice I feel is more geared towards non-verbal Autistic however it also talks alot about ADD and Aspergers. I'de recomend it to any parent with a child with any of the relivent disorders and also to people who have a change to work closely with such children.
