EDIT: Further thoughts after a few days.
If like me you set your PC to copy over large number of files to the internal memory, don't fill the drive to absolute capacity. I did that and the player simply kept shutting down without giving me the chance to do anything. I removed a couple of albums and it now works fine. I still have something like 1800 separate tracks on it! I still have about 20GB free on the card, and the player is now holding all the music on my PC. In the longer run it should be able to hold a large proportion of my CD based music collection, perhaps all - although that keeps growing because I don't buy MP3 downloads only physical CDs. All I need now is a long car journey to test it out!
I was worried about volume levels but that turned out to be an issue with the operation of my bluetooth headphones. That resolved and you have all the volume you need - or at least that I need.
I've successfully linked the player to my bluetooth car radio and to my headphones. I had to make the car radio link from the radio end, but that was again based on my experience with the headphones. I suspect I could have done it from either end.
On the use of the card, this is still an annoyance, but what I intend to do when I finally feel the need to change things around is simply to shuffle albums between the internal memory and the card using my PC. If I want to listen to a specific album that isn't an issue regardless of location. I have also created a folder on the card for podcasts, because here the lack of the shuffle functions etc doesn't matter.
I've left the rating at 2*. This failure to integrate the memory card with internal memory for functions like shuffle appears to be a long standing issue with Creative MP3 players which they claim to be addressing but that has been the case for several years.
The M300 is up against the iPod Nano. Except it's half the price of the Nano. And while it's slightly bigger and definitely a bit thicker than the Nano that's not necessarily a bad thing - it's not THAT much bigger, and the extra size makes it less fiddly to use than a Nano. The lack of a touch screen also makes it less fiddly than a Nano (although the Nano's tiny touch sensitive screen is fiddly but fun, at least in small doses). That said, you'll be using the lock function a lot as otherwise the side buttons are sensitive enough to be accidentally triggered when you put the M300 in your pocket.
As for sound quality, the bass could do with a bit of a boost. Other than that it's no better or worse than most other mp3 players. Either way sound quality depends on the quality of your headphones as much as anything else.
So cutting a long story short:

Lightweight (you'll be forever checking your pocket to make sure it's still there)
Excellent battery life
Easy to use, menus easy to navigate
Simple volume control is a lot less fiddly than all things Nano
Expandable storage (if you want to splash the cash)
It's HALF the price of an iPod Nano
CONS
Nano looks more stylish
Just like all things iPod it comes with bog standard headphones (replace them with Sennheisers if you've got any sense)
On something this small and lightweight the big sprung clip on the back of a Nano is a good idea - Creative, take note!
It's easy enough to set up on the PC, and you don't have to worry about syncing through special software with online accounts and such like - all done without any fuss, as easy as putting files onto a memory stick.
With a natty, compact design, it's unobtrusive and utterly portable - ideal as your gym / cycling / jogging MP3 player. The unit itself feels sturdy and hardy, and should resist a fair few everyday knocks and drops!
An excellent, great value alternative to other perhaps more 'obvious' choices of player.
