Product Description

Product Description

Creative Writing is the essential guide for all students wanting to develop their literacy skills and improve their grades in English assignments and examinations. It is the first in the Teach Your Child to Write Good English series. Creative Writing has been written by an experienced teacher and tutor and written with the needs of children in mind. This book concentrates specifically and in depth on Creative Writing required by the National Curriculum, providing everything needed to stimulate a child to write imaginatively. It is specifically targeted at Key Stage 2 and 3 (ages 8-14 years). However, it provides a useful aid for students taking GCSE at foundation level. It contains material suitable for SATS examinations, for those taking 11+ entrance examinations and for students learning English as a foreign language. Creative Writing will guide students through the story writing process, as if they had a tutor by their side. This book is designed to help the child with thinking up ideas, providing starting points for writing, structuring and organizing their writing into paragraphs. It features writing a good introduction with characters, setting and plot, building up suspense and winding up the plot with a suitable resolution. Attention is given to making writing more interesting by varying sentence types, using punctuation and good grammar. The student will investigate different narrative structures for writing stories, exploring various viewpoints so they can decide if they write in first or third person. They will learn to evoke mood and atmosphere by using good vocabulary. Creative Writing includes an exciting range of model answers and sample texts written by children and provides practice questions to test them. Common errors made by students are highlighted and corrected. It is packed with vital hints and tips on gaining those top grades. Creative Writing is ideal for working through at home, supplementing school work. By working methodically through this book the students will grow in confidence and will learn to enjoy writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars An invaluable teaching book!, 19 May 2008
By Emma (Southampton) - See all my reviews
What's great about this book and really makes it stand out from other books on the market is that it specifically concentrates on story writing in detail as opposed to trying to superficially cover all areas of National Curriculum English. It is therefore, a thorough and detailed guide. It gives the child a real knowledge of how to go about writing a story, step by step. This is done in a clear, concise and fun way, which children really understand. My child is now confident writing stories and even her teacher has remarked on the improvement in her writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE book for anyone struggling with a reluctant writer!, 6 May 2008
By Pat (Suffolk) - See all my reviews
An absolutely brilliant series of books, what a find! A real wealth of information - everything a child needs to know about creative and story writing. What's more this book is very well set out, clear and easy to understand.
My son (11) really enjoyed reading the stories and amazingly for him, this book has actually inspired him to start writing - where every other book failed. I have bought just about every book on the market for Key Stage 2 English and was genuinely extremely impressed with this one.
It teaches children the skills needed for writing excellent stories; including planning a story, structuring a story with a beginning, middle and end, building up characters and settings, ideas for making a story more interesting i.e. using different sentence types and vocabulary, tips on spelling, punctuation and grammar and much more. There are many ideas for story writing and inspiration to get a child started with writing. I especially liked the model answers. I found it worked well when my child read the model stories through a few times and then went away and wrote his own.
Thanks to this book, my son is well on the way to gaining a level 5 in his KS2 English SATS.
The other two books in the series, `Learning Persuasive Writing and Argument' and `Information Writing' are also top class and I would thoroughly recommend them too!
