Soundcards take away the audio processing from the CPU and motherboard and instead process most of the audio on the soundcard which helps to reduce as many processes running on your CPU, thus helping the overall performance of your comoputer. The audio control is incredible. Before when i was running on motherboard sound i was struggling in the volume control panel trying to get my 5.1 to sound equal all around the room, with the software which comes with the soundcard this is a simple task. As well as the soundcard helping for surround sound, it also has some other very cool features. There are EAX effects for producing your music as though you were listening to it in a theatre or hall, X-Fi CMSS-3D, X-Fi Crystalliser, smart volume management and more! All of these are designed to enhance and improve sound quality.
As well as all of the enhancing features, the audio control is split up for 3 types of users: gamer, entertainment and Musician. Gamer has basic control, quick for setting bass levels and some enhancing settings, entertainment has a huge array of options including surround option and THX enhancement, musician is for people that use Midi or usb instruments and want to have a strong hold over the usage of these instruments through the soundcard, i myself haven't delved into this much yet but the setup for it seems to be very detailed.
The soundcard supports up to 7.1 surround sound speakers, it has an optical in and out for connecting to for example: an xbox, and has Dolby digital encoding but not 5.1 decoding as far as i know from an OPTICAL CABLE, but i think there are people that have worked on drivers to allow for decoding from an xbox for 5.1. Even though i am running mine through an optical with 2.1 set on my xbox is still is output through every speaker and sounds brilliant but only has sound positioning left, centre and right, no behind or in front but all the same its brilliant. There is also a microphone input. The card fits in a PCI Express slot and is quick and easy to fit.
The soundcard also comes with a huge host of software for sound creation and sound playing etc and i would suggest installing all of these programs, testing them out and uninstalling the ones you don't need.
Overall this card was worth every penny and is excellent all round. The enhancements and control i know have over my speakers is nothing lower than excellent.
It sounds fantastic:
I love the way it brings surround sound to life (it puts you into games, and when playing music, every speaker suond good, unlike motherboard sound where i used to get crackly fuzzy noises in rear and side speakers),
and the various software enhancements - of which there are many, like X-Fi Crystalizer to name one - really make a difference to my listening experience. It is really customisable so you can change it to suit your needs, and the different modes: Game, Entertainment (Music/Movie) and Audio Creation, make a easily-to-use way to get the card to do sound the way you want.
I would definitely recommend this card to anyone wanting high quality, pure, clear sound. I find the equilizer can let you set tone levels without losing sound quality in any areas
The price i paid was reasonable for what I received.
My only criticism would possibly be that the 3.5mm TRS audio jack connectors/sockets on the card are quite close together, so audio jack leads with wide bits around the jack don't fit in together. My leads fitted mostly; to solve the problem for the wide-ended leads, I bought 50cm audio jack lead extensions with a smaller base around the jack, and put them inbetween the problematic leads and the sound card.
However, don't let you put this off, it sounds great, very clear (especially when connected to high-end speaker systems).
I'm going to listen to some music now.
I decided to go for a PCI-e solution (mainly because the only PCI slot was in an awkward place and I had a spare PCI-e slot going). I settled on this card mainly because of previous experience with creative sound cards (I've a PCI X-Fi in my desktop PC), having always got good clear sound. I've yet to have any issues with it, got surround sound as soon as the speakers were plugged in and got everything set up to my liking within twenty minutes.
