I bought this card because I'd been having trouble with the onboard sound on my Asus A8N-SLI motherboard since upgrading to Windows 7 64-bit.
I bought the card from another online retailer and it wasn't packed very well. I suspect Amazon would have sent it in a box at least.
Steps I took:
Downloaded the most up to date driver for the SoundBlaster 5.1 VX from the Creative Website (driver dated July 2009).
Powered down the pc and installed the card in a white PCI slot.
Powered up the PC and installed the drivers followed by another restart.
Spent three hours trying to get the card working right.
First thing to note, having installed the card, Windows 7 recognised the new hardware on start-up and started searching for the best drivers on windows update. I cancelled this as I wanted the proper Creative drivers.
Went through the Creative driver set-up - no problems. Restarted the machine.
My set-up is a standard 2.0 speaker high-fi connected by mini-jack to the PC. I opened up my winamp player and put an mp3 on loop whilst I tried to work out the right settings. The closest I could get to having any sound was to have the Audio Channels set to Quadraphonic and sound coming through when I tested rear left and rear right. I could barely get any of my mp3 track through the speakers though - obviously this was being channelled through the (phantom) front left and front right. When setting to standard stereo setting, the level indicators where moving but there was 0% noise, even whilst pressing the test speaker button.
Unfortunately, I don't know exactly what triggered the working solution, but around three hours in I had disconnected the 2.0 speaker jack plug from the soundcard and plugged standard headphones into the green jack socket instead. Sound came through great and in Stereo. I plugged the 2.0 speakers back into the green jack socket and they are working perfectly.
So to summarise, it is possible to get 2.0 speaker set-ups working off this card in Windows 7 64-bit. Don't try uninstalling/reinstalling drivers if there was no apparent fault with that process when you first installed them. If you experience difficulties, chances are it's a Windows setting problem not the driver. Try the headphone trick as I did. I don't attribute the trouble I had to the soundcard; I think it's more to do with Windows 7 recognising it properly.
Now, when I go into the SoundBlaster Settings tab, settings read '2/2.1 Speakers'; 'EAX Effects' unchecked; 'CMSS' unchecked; Performance is 96KHz and 24bit. I had tried these settings prior to plugging in headphones and it didn't work. I'm afraid to touch/change anything now just in case I lose what is, great sound. If it continues to work like this, I'm overall very happy with the purchase.
