Product Description

Product Description

"Creative Play for your Baby" is the ideal book for modern parents who want their children to develop their creativity and imagination through play. This book teaches you how to let your child develop according to the Steiner theory, which helps children to fulfil themselves naturally and holistically in mind, body and spirit. Each chapter deals with a different element of your child's development and include an expert summary of Steiner theory and how it relates to children and parents today. You will find instructions for how to make over 20 beautiful toys from natural materials to encourage your child to develop creativity, awareness, confidence and imagination.

From the Author

Children can be quite content playing with simple toys with which they can exercise their imagination. As far as learning is concerned complex toys that are so-called "educational" are unnecessary and parents should not feel obliged to purchase them for fear of their child being left behind. Participating in household tasks, being told stories, playing games that involve movement, and being out in nature are of much greater value in that they take place in a setting that helps the child's personal, social and emotional development as well. Experiencing learning in a social context and being given time to interact meaningfully is a better start than having expensive consumerist objects that do not relate to the values of childhood. 3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful ideas, 15 Jan 2008

(REAL NAME)
This is a well presented book with lots of great ideas for making beautiful natural toys with your loved one.
This is not a good starter book for parents intrested in making their own toys as many of the toys require items that many people just would not have unless they were already intrested in woodwork and knitting. There are a few very basic toys that anyone could make but the majority of toys require the maker to have basic knitting, sewing and woodwork skills. I unfortunately have none of these skills but the book has inspired me to purchase some knitting and sewing tools so that I can learn!!

5.0 out of 5 stars CREATIVE PLAY FOR YOUR BABY, 7 Nov 2007
CREATIVE PLAY FOR YOUR BABY

REVIEWED BY Winny Mossman
October 2007

This is a lovely book, for Parents, Carers and Educators. The thought provoking text pays homage to the wonder of early childhood and recognises the vital, rewarding but often challenging task of parenting and caring for the little child and highlights the sense of awe and wonder and the privilege of watching of a baby grow and develop, unhurried at his or her own pace away from the `race' of today's trend of adult conceived aims and targets.
It paints a clear picture of the baby as a being with his or her own potential and destiny, not as someone to be shaped in the adults own image but to be guided with love, imagination and warm care. Accompanying a little child on this amazing journey is surely one of the most important and far reaching of life's vocations.
The book is a celebration of play and a baby's innate ability and `thirst' for this `work of early childhood' and underlines the importance of the adult role in this lovely game of give and take, imitation and repetition.

Toys, especially those made from natural materials that nurture the senses and allow imagination room to develop play a great part in this communication between adult and child. The toys in this book are simple and beautiful, the `why and how' are clearly explained and the instructions for making them are easy to follow. There is a good variety to suit from newborn to 5 years old.
The book will help Parents to make lovely gifts for their little ones, so much more meaningful an appropriate than the expensive toys in most shops. How about giving it to Grandparents? It would be a good way to tell them how you feel about bringing up your child as well as giving them ideas for gifts that will please every one.

For Teachers and carers it gives a different perspective on the early years and the developing child and the section on Steiner education is informative and well written. For the early childhood educator, or new Steiner Waldorf teacher or those who have not yet ventured into making toys for their classrooms, and for carers and students it will be an inspiration help you to be creative. The text is helpful in communicating with parents and the book would be a good addition to the recommended reading list and especially helpful for Parent and child group leaders and the parents and little ones in their groups.

Many of the toys could also be made with and by the children in the Early years setting.
