Book Description

8 Sep 2010 Lark Photography
In the most comprehensive book on the subject, renowned author Joe Meehan details the use of both optical and digital filters in creative digital photography. He walks both complete beginner and advanced amateurs through the various ways they can employ neutral density or polarising filters to even out exposures or use soft-spot and diffusion filters to add atmosphere to portraits. Theres also in-depth instruction on working with digital in-camera filters such as monochrome and sepia, as well as filters in image processing software (like Photoshop and plug-ins) to sharpen, distort or create brush-stroke effects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! 2 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
Joseph Meeham immediately on the inside of the front cover tells you what you what you will gain from this book "In this book you'll; Master techniques such as solarisation and infrared imagery". I love this as the seven bullet points essentially sum up what you will learn from this book right from the outset. This I find particulary useful as on many a time I will read a photography book and actually think to myself what have I actually learnt. I therefore as a consequence don't feel fulfilled; however almost always when out on the field I find out later I did pick something up.
Meeham also claims that that this book is a "invaluable reference" and I believe this to be true as after I finsihed the book I have refered back to it at least half a dozen times to see what filters are available and whether they will be of any benefit to any of my photographs.

Sections in the Book

Foreword ( A good brief explanation of what filters are and the two types of different filters corrective and creative)

The Photographic Qualities Of Light (A explanation of how a image is formed, the three qualities of light; Light Intensity, Light Contrast and Color Content of Light and how they can be controlled or emphasized + more)

Filters for Digital Photography ( Takes you through all the different types of optical filters from the infamous circular polariser to the lesser known close up filters and explains there properties and how to use them correctly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Filters 101 28 Feb 2011
By Poobear - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Having been a photographer with film and now getting back into it with digital is almost like learning a new language. This book separates the use of filters on the camera (what I'am used to)and in the digital darkroom. I want to do as much as possible with image presentation in the camera; and with the new digitals white balance control you can create or dramitize in camera. This book talks about gear, not only filters but camera types, lenses, tripods etc. I have found this to be a very informative and useful book;as I have been away from photography for many years.

I have never learned so much about filters as I have reading this book. I love that it talks about on-camera filters as well as those you apply in post. The images throughout the book are great as well. This is already a cherished addition to my photography library.
5.0 out of 5 stars All you might need? 1 Mar 2014
By ritewinger - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book covers the use of lens filters, from Circular polarizers and Neutral Density to filters in post processing, i.e. Photoshop. Its very complete and easy to digest, in spite of some saying its "too technical". Most cameras and software is somewhat "technical", no? Highly recommend to any photographer not yet using filters....
4.0 out of 5 stars Nice book...bit technical for me 14 Nov 2012
By David A. Jones - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a nice, high quality book. It covers all that it claims. It is a bit more technical than I was expecting, and less giving examples of how to us each filter. But all in all, an OK book
