Product Description

Synopsis
This definitive guide to studio lighting explains and demonstrates universal lighting principles that help photographers to think on their feet and master lighting theory and technique. Explained are essential concepts such as why light behaves the way it does and how to manipulate it to its best effect. Concrete, practical examples illustrate topics such as shooting light, dark, and reflective surfaces; mastering contrast control; modifying shadow formation to effectively shape mid- and light-coloured objects; creating definition in black objects; and using Photoshop to fine-tune subjects. Instruction is also provided on creating simulated sunlight, painting with light, using softening filters, and lighting subjects in motion. Compelling photographs and numerous lighting diagrams are included.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take control of studio lighting, 18 Jul 2007
This book teaches the reader how to proactively take control of studio lighting to achieve exactly the effect they want.
Topics such as shadows, highlights, shadow/diffused edge transfer, highlight/diffused edge transfer and reflections are covered in detail with both theory and examples of how to manipulate the lighting to achieve any desired combination. The author demonstrates the evolution from first effort to finished shot using multiple diagrams, pictures and text so the reader can easily follow his thought process.

For many of the examples, minimal equipment is used (in fact, many only use a single light with reflectors and diffuser) so you don't need a big budget to start putting the ideas into practice.

Studio examples include still life and portraiture but there is also an informative example of a portrait shot outdoors mixing daylight with flash.

Overall, this is a great read and one which I will refer back to again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Authoritative Guide, 27 Feb 2008
This really is an authoritative guide to studio lighting; with some excellent photographs, includes plenty of diagrammatic lighting examples and technical breakdowns. This is a great reference book and should be in the forefront of your bookshelf. Ideal for professional and serious amateur photographers'.
