Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Using Creative's latest generation of audio technology the Sound Blaster Audigy Player offers cutting edge gaming effects and advanced music features. Creative Labs has been shaping the soundside of the gaming world for years and it's promising to do the same again, but this time with the successor to the Live! series of sound cards called Audigy.

The new Audigy sound cards offer many new technical improvements over Creative's previous range of cards and even most existing cards by other manufacturers. To start with, the quality of sound that the Audigy can handle has been upped to 24-bit at 96 KHz with an extremely low 100 db signal to noise ratio, meaning you'll get the clearest sounds possible, whether playing games or music tracks.

In addition Audigy uses a new 32-bit processor that's four times as powerful as the old Live! sound cards. This lets the Audigy create a whole set of musical and gaming effects using EAX Advanced HD. While playing music real-time environmental effects can be applied, as well as special effects such as audio clean-up that removes pops and crackles from tracks while time scaling lets you slow down and speed up music playback.

For games the new EAX system can process four separate environmental effects at the same time, while also being able to morph sounds between locations and create realistic reflections. Meaning the Audigy can generate the most realistic sounding game environments ever, whether you're using a simple two speaker set up or a full Dolby Digital surround set.

Another bonus is the addition of the SB1394 port, that adds FireWire connectivity and networking as standard on all of the Audigy cards. There are cheaper sound cards available, but if you take into account the extra FireWire port on top of all the new enhancements to the card, along with the improvements to the EAX effects, this is the best in gaming sound. --Nick Baxter

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Features 28 April 2002
The Creative SB Audigy Player is the best sound card you can get for your pc for the money... The clarity of the sound is amazing and is especially good if you're listening through a 5.1 speaker system. It says on the box it delivers high definition audio and crystal clear, hiss free sound and that's exactly what it does.
The card is packed with features, including advanced EAX surround sound in games (a must for the avid pc gamer). Hearing cars zooming behind you adds a whole new dimension to racing games. The card also provides Dolby Digital 5.1 decoding and is good through a 5.1 system like the Creative Inspire 5300 - excellent if you watch DVD's on your PC.
The card comes with an extensive software bundle and some excellent utilities for configuring your speakers and MIDI. These are well designed and easy to use. It also comes with a full version of the excellent "Giants", a fantastic pc game that did poorly in the charts.
Installation did go smoothly, however Creative are in need to sort out their driver installation CD. This is because the installation wizard forces you to install the windows drivers each time, so if you have just installed the driver and the update and want to one of the apps of the CD you missed off first time it tries to install the old drivers over the new ones, resulting in all kinds of crashes. Install what you need first time round is my advice. Oh, don't install the creative taskbar; it makes windows take ages to boot up. This is just a minor issue and probably won't affect most users.
To make the most of the soundcard I recommend using it with decent speakers so you can really pump up the volume on the superb music playback. Well-done Creative on another excellent sound card.

5.0 out of 5 stars Audigy - sets a new standard for sound clarity. 19 Dec 2002
Although Audigy 2 is out, if you can't afford that much extra you aren't loosing out on anything with this.
It has full support for Dolby Digital 5.1 and Surround Speakers. (Audigy 2 Supports Dolby Digital EX, which is designed for 6.1 speakers and how many of us have 6.1 speakers? let alone 5.1!)
Sound clarity is amazing, and the eax effects are very noticable in modern game titles such as Mafia.
The MIDI synthesiser is also impressive, delivering great synthesised instruments.
I was also pleased that Creative's wave editing programme can now export and import MP3 files!
This is a great sound card, everything about it is excellent. The only criticism I have is it doesn't support DOLBY PRO-LOGIC surround, so don't except surround from old games such as Unreal Tournament.

1.0 out of 5 stars This thing is bad 22 May 2002
By A Customer
If you own a radeon based card and buy the audigy, prepare for trouble. I disabled ACPI, changed IRQ, changed slots etc etc etc and still this product would not work. Creative won't admit a problem, but do a search on the internet for compatibility issues and you will see the problems this card has. Stay clear. I took mine back and bought a Sonic Fury, may be older, but at least it works. Also note, Creative have released only 1 update to the original drivers since it came out about a year ago. No plans for new ones.
