Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Creative's latest MP3 player, the Zen NX, is in many respects a huge advance on previous versions. It is a world away from the chunky design of previous models and is truly pocket sized.

The 30 GB of storage is enough to accommodate 8,000 MP3s at 128 kbps. The battery provides around 14 hours of playback between charges. And the USB2 connectivity allows for a-song-a-second transfer rates.

The built-in software enables playlist management and there's a host of options for twiddling with playback. Environment options range from indoor arena and concert hall to bathroom and jazz club--applying each has a clearly audible effect. You can slow down or speed up playback, which is potentially useful for spoken word identification, and you can use Smart Volume Management to avoid sudden changes in volume that might make you jump during late-night easy listening.

Desktop software comes in the shape of Creative's MediaSource and makes music creation and management quick and easy. This isn't as good as some software on the market, but it manages playlists and synchronises desktop and device-based music libraries. Separate software allows you to send files of any type direct to the Zen for transfer between computers.

The supplied belt-clip case is fairly good and the headphones deliver pretty good sound reproduction. The Zen's display is clear and the jog-dial helps make selecting tracks and setting playback options easy. There is one major downside: you can't send output audio to a separate device via a wired connection--something anyone who has made playlists for parties or leisure and sent them to an amplifier will really miss. If Creative puts this feature into a new version of the Zen, it will have everything--until, of course, you have more than 30 GB of music to store. --Sandra Vogel

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb value for money!, 7 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Creative Jukebox Zen NX (Electronics)
I am delighted with my purchase of the Zen NX 30Gb MP3 player.
The unit is very sleek and compact, about the size of a cassette walkman (much easier to carry around than the faulty Rio Riot I had previously).

The software that comes with it isn't great, but it does the basics. It is possible to download a free update from Microsoft which will make the Zen appear as a device in Windows Explorer and then you can simply drag and drop files.

Sound quality on the Zen is superb. Supplied headphones are better than I expected.

The unit is fairly easy to use. Scroll wheel system is a bit fiddly, but OK when you get used to it. Playlists can be created on the PC and then copied across.

The Zen can also be used to store any kind of data, not just music, so it is an ideal back up device.

Although it is a USB 2 device, my PC only has USB 1.1. This is no problem though, it works fine - just slower than its full potential. It took a few hours to initially copy across my music collection, but once its done I don't think speed is such an issue. An album copies in a few minutes even at USB 1.1 speeds.

An extra bonus is that the player comes preloaded with half a gig of very high quality classical music played by the Beijing Philharmonic!

At £199 this is fantastic value for money - just compare the cost against an ipod.

Highly recommended.

I just got mine this morning and already it is packed to the rafters with a large proportion of my cd collection. The bundled software is teriffic and delightfully simple to use. USB 2 interface is very quick although a large MP3 collection, (20 gb+), would take a wee while, its definately worth the wait. Crystal clear sound, good quality headphones and even the leather pouch is just as pretty as the Ipods. If you are a PC user i would definately give the Zen some thought if you are considering getting an IPod, its almost as pretty, gigabyte for gigabyte its a great deal less expensive and it plays WMA files, what more can you ask for. Thumbs up.

5.0 out of 5 stars thinking about an ipod? think again..., 27 Dec 2003
This review is from: Creative Jukebox Zen NX (Electronics)
This has been the best purchase of the year, I got it this morning, and got all my music onto it a couple of hours (and thats at USB 1.1 speeds) whilst it was happily charging off the USB cable. The supplied headphones are superb, very comforatble and very surprising sound quality. The EAX effects are very effective, and easy to use. It comes with about 500 megs of preloaded MP3s, which is an added bonus. The software that comes with it isn't the best of things, but it gets the job done, considering that once the music is on the player you can order and search your music very effciently.

I would recommend this product to anyone, and after using an IPod as well, I can only laugh at anyone who says the IPod is the best of MP3 players...
