These are comfortable and produce a detailed, but relaxed sound. The bass is not as strong as my Koss PortaPro headphones, so they do not sound as good when playing rock music. However most other forms of music sounds great, creating very atmospheric keyboards and acoustic music.
So why 5 stars? I travel daily on the noisiest, most clattering line of the Moscow metro (square wheels?!). With my Koss headphones, I was limited to listening to loud rock music at full volume. Anything else got drowned out. Then, as I entered work, everyone would look round due to the music still blaring from my phones. Now, due to the active noise cancelling, I can enjoy the full 3806 tracks on my three year old Creative Zen jukebox at a sound level more appropriate for first thing in the morning. They are a little bulky (the clever design means that they fold down well) but the fact that the phones completely cover the ears, further helps to cut out the noise (in both directions). The volume control on the phones means I can turn down the volume when talking to a shop assistant without having to remove my mp3 player from my pocket and even the ability to unplug at the phone end is useful.
They are cheaper than most other noise cancelling headphones.
There are better sounding phones but few, if any, that will sound so good on a noisy bus, train or plane, especially at this price.

I was interested to look back at the reviews a year on. Thanks to all those who have alerted me to the problem about the cable from the left to right phones breaking. On mine, after extensive use for over a year, the insulation on the wires is split but the wires remaines intact. I now avoid folding them and now use thm mainly for home use listening to music on my laptop after my little boy has gone to bed. I still feel that I have got my moneys worth ut have reduced my initial rating from ***** to **** though this does not seem to be possible - only the comments can be reviewed and edited.

I just got these headphones today, and have given them a good test, riding around on the London Underground (a.k.a the noisest place on earth.)

Usually, using in-ear ipod earphones, I have to adjust my volume levels constantly to allow for the varying degrees of noise around me - and in some parts of my journey no matter how loud I turn up my music, I can't hear it over the train (and I hate to think what that's doing to my ear drums)

But today... most of the background train noise was blocked out, even in the noisest parts of my journey. I didn't have to touch my volume level once, and had a very pleasant ride.

The headphones are very comfortable - I'm flying to NZ next month, and am looking forward to seeing how they feel after many hours continuous use. My only concern was that my ears got quite hot, but I was in an un-airconditioned tube deep below the earth.

Pros:
- Block out 99% of background noise
- Comfortable
- Nearly as good as the Bose version, but £250 cheaper

Cons:
- They look abit funny, the actual headphones are fine, but the head band pokes out quite far and looks a bit stupid, not very streamlined.
- The sound quality was a wee-bit tinny.
- You could hear that funny mobile phone noise like you hear on a radio - but that was only once, as I resurfaced from the tube, and I guess that had something to do with phones getting their coverage back?

Overall, I think these would suit most people for use on flights or train journey's - not sure about day-to-day use though, I guess I need to use them a bit longer to find out...

They work! 29 Nov 2006
I bought these for long haul flights. I've always had a problem sleeping on these journeys, and often cannot hear the sound from the entertainment system due to the high level of background noise.

And they work! On a couple of 12 hours flights from London to Hong Kong, I put on these headphones, switched them on, and sat there cocooned in my own small world of relative silence. The roar is stilll audible but only slightly. I could hear the entertainment systems sounds clearly, and when I wanted to sleep, I turned the volume down and slept well.

The noise cancelling was good enough so that when I removed the headphones, I felt deafened by the sudden roar that I hadn't been aware of. They were comfortable enough for me to sleep in (though not with my head on its side) which is remarkable for me, though after about 8 hours of continuous use, my ears felt a little uncomfortable. A quick trip to the toilet and a scratch of my ears made it all as good as new and there were no long term problems for me whatsoever which was good considering this was the first time I'd worn them. As a bonus, my ears didn't pop like they sometimes do.

For the negatives, I found them a little muffled but on an airplane, this was trivial. For the first time, I could watch movies without constantly adjusting the volume. For me, these headphones are great and I will not take long haul flights without them now.

EDIT: After a few more months using these headphones, I thought I would add a longer-term review.

In day-to-day use (ie, sitting in your living room listening to music), the quality isn't too good. Like I first thought, the sound is muffled.

But on transport like an aeroplane, they still are fantastic. There are three points to this: first, I can watch a movie on the in-flight entertainment system without blasting my eardums to pieces because the background noise is significantly reduced; and second, because of the lower volume of background noise, I can listen at a lower volume, hence less damage to my eardrums; finally, when changing altitudes, my ears do not 'pop' with these headphones on: they fit me well enough so maybe they form a nice pressure barrier around them.

I will not fly long haul without them and some spare batteries which last a very long time too.

The only problem I have is that the volume switch can be accidentally raised when resting your head back, but switch the headphones over, and all is well!

An excellent product that I do not regret buying.
