I bought these for two specific reasons - to cut down on wiring and space (previous 5.1 and 7.1 systems meant cables all over the place along with finding spots for satellite speakers), and because of the remote control (to avoid having to keep getting up to adjust settings if watching/browsing from a distance). In addition, with a fairly small room I assumed that 48w and three speakers would actually be enough for my multimedia needs.
Well, the speakers do work; both the bass and the tweeters deliver quite insistent volume and you can use the remote or the cabled volume control/remote receiver to adjust the balance between bass, treble and overall volume, along with a quick mute function, and some media buttons (play, forward etc.) that you can program. The speakers are very small and light, and setting up is very easy enough. Having a 2.1 system does simplify things and the remote works from up to 15ft away without having to point it directly at the receiver. The tweeter leads aren't very long, but this setup isn't designed to cover large areas so it's not an issue.
However, with hindsight I will almost certainly choose differently next time. The main thing is that the sound quality is cold, cold, COLD. Bearing in mind I previously had alternative PC speaker setups, and also have reference speakers in the same room for use with a media creation PC, I can say categorically this is not a room acoustic issue. The sub-woofer is loud but not at all warm; and the treble is dry and bright, but not in a good way! In fact, the sound almost reminds me of certain reference speakers (eg. Yamaha NS10s), with a harsh, honking midrange and flat resonances - but that's NOT what I want from my PC speakers - I want a bit of sparkle, a little extra low end and some roundness to flatter any compressed digital sounds (MP3s, Youtube etc.), and some kind of rewarding beef when I'm playing CDs or DVDs. The poor sound quality actually offsets the benefit of the remote control, since it requires a lot more fiddling to get a "nice" balance and level. The fact that there's quite a lot of loudness available (I rarely even touch 40% of the level) isn't enough of a compensation for me, but might be a selling point if you like your music pumping.
I guess as always you get what you pay for. I am still a fan of Creative products in general, but I know there are 2.1 setups out there with more warmth and richer sound quality, so next time I will take the plunge and spend a bit more.
