Does its job 1 Jun 2010
By Thorgar
I bought this headset about a month ago, after my Creative fatal1ty mark I headset broke down after a year of use. It still offers the best level of comfort of the headsets I've tried in this price range, as well as relatively good sound, especially for gaming purposes, as the bass is certainly disproportionately high, altough this can be adjusted. However, if you are mainly looking for something to listen to music with and having less emphasis on the mic, I'd recommend buying headphones and a mic separately, as you would get much more bang for your buck.

Why only 3 stars? Well, to be honest, I don't see much improvement over the first series of the fatality-headphones. Certainly they are much more comfortable, but there are only minor improvements in terms of sound quality. The microphone has an incomprehensible design-flaw: even minor head movements make it vibrate a lot, causing distortions in the sound. Also, the wire is EXTREMELY weak. I broke it two weeks after I bought these and had to do some soldering to make it work again, as the warranty doesn't include minor accidents. Durability is an important factor for me; I don't want to buy a new headset every year, so I'll probably buy something like Senheisers next (the last headphones worked for 5 years in similar use).

So, if you want a good headset mainly for gaming purposes but with less regard to durability, this is a very good choice.

After 2 years of constant use of the first Fatality gaming headset and still going strong to this day i decided to buy the mark 2 version as the first ones were so good,i thought these might be even better.
First off they seem to be made of more high quality materials ,real soft leather around the ear cups and on the top band with some padding inside,i found them really comfortable as i did the first ones, as comfortable as each other, the ear cups cover my ears completely and blocks out more outside noise than the original fatality.

The mic is detachable clips off and on easily,as for the silencer and voice morphing i cant comment on that as i havent got a fatality titanium sound card only an extreme gamer .
Sound quality is just as good as the original fatality headset, maybe a bit better its hard to be sure but they sound really good, bit heavy on the bass ,i had to turn off bass boost on my sound card because otherwise there is too much bass with it on.

If you have the original fatality's you wont see an amazing amount of difference with these, but if you haven't got a gaming headset or want to upgrade to these i would recommend these very very highly

Creative HS-980 MarkII Fatal1ty Gaming Headset with Detachable Noise-Cancelling Microphone

I don't know why I bought fatal1ty to be honest because I gave the fatal1ty mk1 headset away after only a week and bought the now discontinued HS950's. But after an accident where I hurled them full power against a wall (dont ask) I needed new ones.

:) 1- you cannot hear the real world when wearing them
:) 2- they are over ear:)
:) 3- the earpads are soft
:) 4- almost 100% sweat free ears on long seesions
:) 5- quite a long cable
:) 6- very snug and comfortable to wear over extended periods
:) 7- sound quality is quite excellent on (CSS/COD-MW2/WOW)
:) 8- they feel sturdy and have a properly fitted feel to them
and doesn't chaff or pinch any part of my head

:( 1- you cannot hear the real world when wearing them (bad point too)
:( 2- they are din+adapter not usb and can be a little tricky to set up
:( 3- the self assembly microphone raises more Q's than it answers
:( 4- microphone feels quite flimsy when using it
:( 5- the cable controller is a bit pathetic really and have already
snapped a piece off and there isnt an led to tell you if the
microphone is on/off so no warnings about dead mikes
(i've included the led thing cos i had one on my last pair and i really found it very useful )

overall they are very nearly an excellent headset to have, just the
points i listed above to dampen the mood. but if you can look past the couple of weak points it has, then you wont be dissapointed with this pair
