Book Description

1 May 2007 Creative Essence
ESSENCE: The Face is the first book in the new 'Creative ESSENCE Series'. Designed for artists with a mid-to-advanced understanding of 3D character creation, the book starts with the photo shoot of model Monika and draws on the methods of six professionals to create a digital model from beginning to end.

Working as a team each artist develops a piece of the 3D character puzzle to show you how lifelike characters are created in a production environment. The Face encompasses reference photography, modeling, UV mapping, texturing and rendering to create a digital double that would be at home in a next-gen game or HD movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT!!! 14 April 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is excellent. The pictures give a really good idea of techniques used to create the 3D head for all stages from initial referece photography, through to modeling, uv lavouts, Texturing and rendering. the book is written in a way that is not restricted to just one 3D program but in fact be applied to almost any 3d animation software. This book is intended for intermediate to advanced users.

An excellent book that I would recommend to anyone interested in Computer graphics

4.0 out of 5 stars For character modelers who want to go pro 19 April 2009

Creative Essence is a series of advance "how-to" books on bringing 3D characters to life. Future titles will look at other aspects of the characters, like modeling, rigging, clothing, etc.

First of all, the goal of this book is to create a photo-realistic face. The tutorials in the book follows a picture-description format throughout. There are plenty of screenshots showing the workflow. The subjects cover the initial photography, modeling, texturing and rendering.

The main bulk of the book is really on texturing and rendering. Right at the back are additional lessons on creating bruising and aging on the model.

The good thing about the book is that the instructions are pretty detailed. They are also very high level requiring the reader to be a relatively advanced 3D user in the first place. Some of the artists involved have developed their own software tools to build more functionality into the default software set.

There are several software used, such as Maya, 3D Max, ZBrush, FaceFen, etc. So unless you already have these in place, it is a pretty pricey setup just to learn to create a photo-realistic model.

Unfortunately, the book doesn't come with the DVD, which must be bought additionally.

I would recommend this book to professional users whose job requires them to create such highly realistic models.

If you're looking to get started in facial modeling, check out Stop Staring: Facial Modeling and Animation Done Right. It's a great book suitable for beginners up to advanced level 3D users.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essence: The Face is good 19 July 2007
By Character Modeler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
For anyone looking to learn how to model and texture a human face from the pros this is an excellent book. There are a few techniques described in the book that are not particularly helpful IMHO but, overall it is a great resource. The first chapter on modeling was not well executed because it really did not give a clear idea about how to go about modeling a human head from scratch. Instead it described how to begin modeling from a pre-existing head the modeler had already created using some proprietary tools written by the modeler to assist him so it is of no use whatsoever if you are just starting out. The rest of the book is quite good and there are some gems later on. I also purchased the DVD with the book which includes all of the models, photography and textures. Overall, I was not tremendously impressed with the DVD. The photography is well done, as are the textures (though there are some areas above the eye and in the ears that could be improved but I can forgive these as they are minor). The modeling however is not well executed IMHO. The mesh topology left a lot to be desired in some key areas around the mouth, chin, eyes, ears and nose. Also there is considerable geometry in the ears but, it is not used particularly well. I don't feel like the modeling was very accurate or faithful to the photography either, specifically around the eyes (they are much too large for a real human; I assume some creative license was taken here). TO be fair, the modeler in question (Hong Suck Suh) is a tremendously talented person and I am I awe of most of his other work but, I don't think this is one of his more successful creative ventures. I highly recommend purchasing the book but, save your money on the DVD unless you are looking for some great photography and DX tools to use for texturing.
