Product Description

Product Description

The face is the most important feature of a doll - it is also the most challenging. Yet, surprisingly, there is very little instruction available on creating doll faces, which means that Creative Cloth Doll Faces fills a void. Author Patti Medaris Culea began her career in art as a portrait painter and she puts that experience to work when creating her doll faces. In this book, she shows readers a simple technique for easily creating faces using her step-by-step approach. She gives tips for how to divide the face into quadrants, graft features together and more. Every aspect of doll making is covered - from the basics to detailed techniques for making the various faces to instructions for putting a pattern together. Readers will learn how to use watercolour pencils, acrylics and fabric paints to colour a face; how to create a face using collage techniques as well as stamping and beading; and tips for working with stretchy fabrics to create indented eyes, separate eyelids and sculpted lips.

This book is absolutely delicious, it full of the most gorgeous hand made characters that you have ever seen, they are spectacular. The child in me just sang out and skipped around the room on its arrival.
Visually it's a real treat. The colors fabrics and fibers used are amazing.
This is just what I was looking for as a workbook; the technicalities focus on the cloth faces, which is the area that I needed ideas for.
Although there are patterns included for the body, so it could be used as single book providing that one has sewing skills already. apparently there is a book for the bodies/clothes too. Which I really must try to source as a companion book.
I have not tried to make a face yet but it is very inspiring and descriptive, I cant wait to get going.
Well done to the author and her helpers. What fun I imagined that you all had making up characters.

I don't think I have been so excited by a book for a long time! It takes the craft of doll making into a completely different dimension but stays firmly rooted in practicality. As a would-be painter, I am finding Patti Culea's instructions on creating faces very illuminating and I have successfully completed a first face using her methodology. Patti's style appeals to the fantasist in me but also to the craftswoman that I would like to be. I think this could be the start of something great!!
