4.0 out of 5 stars Creative Close-ups 2 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a nice book, but is aimed at those who are just starting close-ups and I never found the depth of the articles within it advanced enough. I bought it for my son and as he is fairly new to close-up work I am sure he will find it a help. I would have given it 5 stars had it been a little more technical and not so dumbed down.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just pretty photos - lots and lots of them! 29 Oct 2012
By Shirin
As a practicing macro photographer, i was very excited to buy this book judging by the highly favourable reviews on Amazon. As i read the book - cover to cover, my excitement waned pretty damn fast. The author has been so vague about his techniques. No solid technical details have been provided. I got tired of the author's pompous style of writing. Use this book for ideas, not for technicals. The only part of the book i felt he was genuinely imparting knowledge was on the photo stacking section. Rest of the book feels like a marketing gimmick, selling himself and selling nikon and lens baby lenses. The book is drivel. "The metal used in jewelry is reflective, meaning that it acts partially like a mirror, depending upon how polished it is." Powerful insights indeed! If you read the following books "Light, Science & Magic" by Hunter and "Understanding Close up Photography" by Bryan Peterson, you would gain the knowledge this book tries to impart but fails.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the better books on this subject 25 Oct 2012
There are relatively few books about close-up photography, which is a shame because it can be a rewarding activity. It can also be a very varied subject and need not rely solely upon nature photography of some of the smaller flowers, insects or animals, as the book demonstrates. It does require some extra attention to detail and may require the purchase of additional equipment, such as a sturdy tripod or lighting. A tripod need not be large or expensive and the lighting can be a form of LED light rather than an expensive ring flash.

Because you are working at very limited distances even with a shorter focal length lens depth of field is going to be very limited unless your subject is essentially flat, hence one reviewer's comment about out-of-focus shots within the book. There aren't any! What there are are shots with some portions that are out of focus, but that is typical of this area of photography.

There is plenty of practical advice within its pages although not all of it is always applicable - locking up the mirror to lessen vibration is one example and was only possible with very few cameras - and a variety of different images, not solely of flowers, insects or tiny amphibians. Some are unusual and quite different, but all are good examples.

With little current competition, although older titles may still be obtainable from some suppliers, this is a must-have for those with the interest.
