The packaging claims this is for 6 years old upwards but these are actually tricky to make properly and I would revise the age up considerably: I borrowed a couple of young teenagers, both of whom are far more artistic than me, and we all struggled. The main problem is that there is no template or mould to make the beads themselves: you simply have to pinch off a piece of the coloured clay and roll out the bead which means that each one ends up being a slightly different size.

Once rolled, you insert the dual gommets, press out a relief design (also a bit fiddly), glaze and paint the bead and then leave it to dry overnight.

The box contains 3 packs of clay in girly colours: light pink, lilac and silvery grey. The paints are the same colours, so there is a limited palette, and there are two glazes, a glittery one and a plain, as well as some stick on diamanté chips.

The relief designs are lovely and sometimes quite elaborate but with such a limited number of clay/paint colours there's not a huge amount of variety in the end results.

We've been using the individual beads as charms to be attached to cards or to ribbons for book-marks and so the variation in size isn't really a problem - but if you wanted to make the bracelets shown here (they're pretty uncool, actually, as the beads have to be large enough to take the gommets) you'd have to be far more dexterous than we have proved to be!

These are quite fun to make once you get the hang of it - but some kind of mould to give uniform sized beads would make the results much better, together with a greater variety of less pastel, girly colours.

Here you can see the kit in use and our results. When we first got it, in a lovely big box, we found it a bit of a learning curve making the beads. I actually really enjoyed making the beads, the ten year old loved the activity, and it was too tricky for the eight year old. Our results, as you should be able to see weren't very professional, but as long as you have realistic expectations about what you can produce it's fun!

We liked the purple and black clay, but aren't mad keen on the pink, which is a sludgy colour. The glazes work well and you get quite a lot of kit in the pack, everything you need to do the craft.

I think the age guideline of six is optimistic, but the kit passed the older kid test with flying colours, and it's nice to see a kit aimed at this age group that isn't too "pink"... Would recommend for a tween crafter with realistic expectations! Great gift.

This kit is quite fun initially, but the results are such a disappointment.
The pictures on the box, show really beautiful beads, and the idea is brilliant.
Take a blob of clay, roll it into a small bead shape, insert the two grommets which make the threading channel through the bead, using the cleverly designed gadget provided, roll it over a template to print a design into the clay, glaze and dry. It's just not that easy though. The clay is very soft and at each stage of production, your bead gets deformed! The designs you print on look fantastic but then when you glaze the bead, you lose the detail! It's just not been thought out very well. No way would a 6 yr old be able to do this, I did it with a 14 yr old and we struggled!
If you decide to buy it anyway, make sure you've got some plastic containers to store the clay in after opening, and if you're daughter is of an impatient nature, tell her in advance that they have to dry overnight!
Oh, and buy some extra bracelet chains from a craft shop cos you only get two in the box and they're not very good!!!

Great for budding fashionista girls - I'd say from about 11+ and not 6 years old as it is very fiddly even for me as an adult. It's a lovely gift but requires patience and time to get the beads a similar shape and size - it would be good if it came with a mould - however we managed it in the end!

My daughter enjoyed playing with the set - the bracelets she is proud of but do look quite homemade!! There's lot's of possibilities to what can be done - with different colour clays and glittery paints - it's a great gift for any creative teenage girls and even for slightly younger if they have someone to help them - great to keep them entertained for a while but may need assistance from an adult but is vert rewarding for them to have something to keep and be proud to wear and design themselves - they can also buy additional coloured clays for more options.

    This was an overall disappointment.

The beads look nothing like the lovely, equally sized, beautifully shaped, shiny, decorated beads - and no matter how hard you try to make them equal and perfectly shaped they will never look like the beads in the images.

Even the careful decoration can't make them look good.

They were fun to make but the result was really less than expected.

We never expected them to be perfect replicas of the images on the boxes but the results weren't anything like them and the "beads" have been thrown into the box and I doubt will be worn by anyone, not even Barbie's worst enemy.

Such a shame as this could have been a really interesting, exciting and educational toy. A really disappointment coming from a company like Crayola.
