Superb Summary Overview 20 Aug. 2012
By Gregory Nixon - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Mircea Eliade described all myths as creation myths, so this book is timelessly relevant. MacLagen doesn't go into much depth in his analysis and he tries to be fair in his point of view, but he still manages a concise overview of the various creation myths from around the world. I found the book very helpful in my paper suggesting that creation myths actually represent the origin of (human) consciousness -- the awakening to self and world. It did not bother me that the illustrations were in B&W, as I was more after the textual analysis, but it may dissuade more visual thinkers from this particular rendering. I liked that he includes our modern scientific explanations of the origins of all things amongst his creation myths (which is well and good), and his categorizations were otherwise quite wise, including "Something from nothing", "The conjugation of opposites", "Descent/Ascent", & "Earth-body and sacrifice", all with good supporting details. He is, like me, a psychological universalist who sees in these diverse myths common themes or archetypes at reveal, upon close examination, extraordinary similarity.
