Product Description

Product Description

The autobiography of the man who brought the theme park concept to Britain, and created some of the world's most thrilling rides and attractions.

He talks about his early beginnings in the theatre, circus and magical cabaret, his time working on some of the most incredible special effects in the James Bond films (including the famous bus crash scene in Live and Let Die), and how he became associated with Madame Tussauds, the world's most famous wax museum. This led to the development of Chessington World of Adventures, then Alton Towers.

The book answers many questions about how enormous theme park rides are conceived and developed, and the fascinating stories behind them, including his most famous ride "NEMESIS" at Alton Towers.

More About the Author

John Wardley is a consultant who specialises in concept design and development for the Theme Park and other mass tourism and leisure industries.

Although semi-retired, he still provides consultancy services to his existing clients, and maintains close contact with developments within the amusement industry.

He was instrumental in the master planning and detailed design of Chessington World of Adventures in Surrey, the considerable success of which led to its owners, the Tussauds Group, subsequently acquiring Alton Towers in Staffordshire. He was then involved in the Group's major development program at this attraction which included concept work on the Runaway Train, Haunted House, and the world-renowned Nemesis Roller Coaster. As a result, Alton Towers became acknowledged as Britain's number one theme park.

He has subsequently created award-winning rides and attractions for theme parks around the world.

John Wardley's early background in the film industry (he created the special effects for five of the James Bond films) equips him with a deep understanding of what entertains the British public. His experience in constructing and performing stage illusions led to him to collaborate with the late Geoffrey Thompson at Blackpool Pleasure Beach to create the long-running magic spectacular "Mystique", which ran for nearly 20 years! As illusion consultant to the first production, he designed and created many of the illusions used throughout the entire run, including the incredible finale, where the entire cast of the show vanish onstage, and instantly re-appear amongst the audience.

John acted as story and script adviser on the four-hour major BBC TV drama serial "Have Your Cake", in which the lead character's professional career is based on his own.

His autobiography "Creating my own Nemesis" was in the Amazon Top-100 Bestsellers for several weeks following its publication. Now in its sixth reprint, it continues to receive excellent reviews

I got my copy earlier this morning, i'am only up to 'Chapter 5' and already the book has gone into great detail about the early life of John Wardley and how he was inspired to become part of the entertainments industry and the ladder he had to climb in order to get there. I can can tell already that this Autobiography is going to be AMAZING, just from the few pages i've read already. I don't want to put it down. I've always been a fan of Johns work from a very early age! i owned a 'VHS' called 'White Knuckle' which featured John riding Nemesis on it's first test run ( a clip i'am sure many of you will have seen ), and since that day i've never looked back, Roller Coasters have been a huge part of my life ever since and still are to this day. What John has done to the Theme Park industry is mind blowing, his work is legendary and he is very popular among enthusiasts. I was lucky enough to meet John back in 2010 when his latest creation opened at Alton Towers, TH13EEN. He's such a great guy, and to own his autobiography is a pleasure, it's great to have an insight on his life and read up on everything he's done both past and present, it's so inspiring. I'll be sad to see him go into retirement later this year.

Highly recommended for any John Wardley fan or Theme Park / Roller Coaster enthusiasts.

What a guy and what a book.
Until recently I had never heard of John
But after many years going to The Towers I felt I needed to know more about the rides and who and how they are developed.
This book offers a fascinating insight to a man who has not only helped develop some of the best rides in the UK but also a man who has dedicated his whole life to entertaining the public in someway shape or form.
Thank you John and have a very happy retirement.

I love Alton Towers and remember when Nemesis was built and all the new rides since. I asked my sister for this for my birthday from Amazon as it was twelve pounds in the Alton Towers shop!
It is great. John Wardley has had such an interesting life and done many interesting and fascinating jobs!! I haven't quite finished the book and just got to the "The Towers" chapter! Great read and keep telling my family about it. If you find Theme Parks interesting and the ideas behind the rides then buy it!
