2.0 out of 5 stars Still at the beta-test stage 2 April 2009
Format:Paperback
This is the first Flash book I have used, so I am unable to make comparisons with other books available. The aim of this publication is to walk you through the creation of a website, making use of various aspects of the Flash CS4 program along the way. Unfortunately, there are two factors which let the book down. First, there are several errors or ambiguous wordings which cause a complete novice like me to stumble. I reached page 38 without a problem but then had to resort to Adobe's online user guide to find out what precisely the text was trying to describe. The next problem was on page 77, followed by one on page 85, a minor omission for Mac users on page 87 and then a confusion on page 97. I give you this list to indicate what you will be up against. All these errors or omissions can be overcome by a reasonably intelligent reader like myself. Unfortunately on pages 106-107 there is a problem with the listed html which demands specialist knowledge rather than just intelligence to circumvent and it was here that my relationship with the book came to an abrupt halt. And this brings me to the second problem. Often the reader follows specific instructions which are not given a wider context or explanation. I felt I was just repeating them "parrot-fashion". Thanks to the book, I have now created Flash CS4 animations and half a website but I feel sure that there are better books out there which offer greater insight and explanation and are almost certainly more ably sub-edited. It's unacceptable to allow any book - but especially an instructional book aimed at beginners - to reach publication in this "first draft" state. Disappointing.

3.0 out of 5 stars pretty good manual 27 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
The manual is not bad, I also have the previous edition of it (for Flash 2004), but I have to say - the older one was a bit more friendly and easier to read for some reason...

2.0 out of 5 stars Visual Quick Project Flash CS4 13 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback
I bought a new copy of this book last month, as a new starter to Flash, book was pretty cheap (great !) but the big problem is that the author has taken down the Web Site with the all source training files on it - so NO easy down load is now available. This will be a terminal problem unless you do some major web searches and track down the 2 remaining sites that have bits of the source files available as a free down load.

OK so you start on the lessons, yes you pick up speed quickly, then you find your results do not match the book, OK this may be because of the above problem, but I found author's teaching style poor, he makes a statement, with out an explanation, expansion or back reference - poor.

Bought the official Adobe Classroom in a Book version, OK it's Adobe so it has to cost big bucks, but you get a source code DVD-ROM with the book, style is loads better and well written - go for the the offical Adobe book, it's way better than this option.
