Review

'An animated tale for progressive thinkers... Infectiously optimistic, this book will be heartening for those who believe schools must evolve, and will raise uncomfortable questions for those who want to turn back the clock on primary curriculum. It may be accessible, and it may take inspiration from Disney, but Mickey Mouse this ain't'

Product Description

Education is the platform for our success or failure. Is our system still fit for purpose? This fascinating study examines this and other key questions in the primary education environment. We live in a world dramatically different from the one we grew up in, the one we were educated in; a world that is changing at an accelerated rate. Education is the platform for our success or failure. The critical question is: is our system still fit for purpose? Will our children be equipped to face the challenges the future holds; the rapidly changing employment patterns and the global environmental, economic and social crises ahead of us? Or will our children grow up to resent their school years and blame them for their unfulfilled potential and achievement? "Leading Tomorrow's Schools Today" explores these questions in the context of early schooling, primary education, some of the most formative and important years of our children's lives. The book presents powerful arguments that suggest an imperative for change and will explore the possible strategies and thinking that can offer a solution. The author provides real context and concrete examples based on the incredible journey taken by one primary school, Grange. He shows how, by developing a creative and futures facing system, it not only evolved from being a school on the verge of failure to a school globally recognised for its success and innovation in two years but more importantly created a system that has equipped its children to be not only prepared for but confident in their futures.

This is an important and accessible read for all educators and parents today. What Gerver achieved at Grange in making the curriculum relevant and exciting is inspirational. Changes so badly needed in the primary and secondary sectors to ensure that children are not disillusioned but thrilled by education have been a long time coming. This book goes a long way towards helping those of us who are committed to a productive and fulfilling life for our children.

best of its kind 20 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
An exceptional read! Richard Gerver manages to take a serious and potentially heavy subject (the schooling of our children!) and produce something that's totally readable and, dare I say, enjoyable! His USP is that he isn't an academic or theorest on the subject, he has a proven track record as a head teacher. He's hands on. Anyone who has turned around a failing school instantly gains my utmost respect! You end up agreeing with just about everything he says, because it's just plain common sense (but not common practice). The chapter on making school like Disneyland is awesome. Richard also manages to squeeze some humour in as well as a few well-chosen anecdotes that help bring the subject matter to life

Top marks. Will someone in a senior government position please take note

So what kind of people will our children need to be? They will need, above all else, huge levels of self-confidence, they will need to be adaptable, utilize their natural creativity and understand their own strengths and weaknesses. They will need to be increasingly self-aware emotionally and intellectually and be capable of building relationships quickly, effectively and often `virtually'. There are many who say that a spirit of entrepreneurship will be vital in our young, both for their own success and our economy's future stability. "e;

Our children need to develop their self-confidence, self-worth, creative and innovative thinking, team-working and communication skills, to have a chance of competing in the global market place. "e;

If we want to develop a successful education system that truly exposes and develops the potential of every individual and prepares them to lead the challenges of the future, we must work to change the nature of one concept: failure and the notion of risk. "e;
