Book Description

26 Nov 2010
The landscape through which railways run is often the inspiration and reason why people choose to model a particular line. Therefore creating a realistic setting in which to operate your railway is an essential aspect of modelling, yet it is often overlooked or left until the last moment. Creating authentic and believable scenery without spending a fortune or buying it 'ready made' is a skill that, with patience and understanding, can be achieved.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fairly hepful 18 April 2012
By Andrew
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My problem was that I was expecting more of this book than it delivered. The author is a respected writer in this field and that influenced me to purchase. Honestly although it is fairly good, it just doesn't have that practical "this is how you take a blank canvas of a model railroad and add realistic scenery". I was hoping for a more step-by-step coverage written with reference to real scenes. Had I been able to browse like you can in a book store I would nopt have bought the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for the Modeller of Scenery/Scenic Items 18 July 2011
By Strider
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A really great book for the railway modeller and military modeller/wargamer alike, showing, in colour step-by-step photos, how to go about modelling specific scenic aspects (water, trees walls etc. etc.), and even showing different methods and techniques for specific scenic aspects e.g. a very nice section on dry-stone walling (Chapter 6 'Fencing, Walls and Hedges') with lots of different approaches discussed within the text and demonstarted with the step-by-step photos.

The only slight criticism I have, is that some of the photos could have been better lit as they are slightly dark, however this doesnt detract from some wonderful scenic modelling (and photos) which also includes some new ideas and approaches, which after nearly 40 years of model making I hadnt seen before.

Tony Hill, with this book, is certainly amongst my top three favourite scenic modellers, along with Richard Windrow and Barry Norman!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a landscape modelling book 3 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
I was quite disappointed with this book. I was expecting something on landscapes i.e. sections of rural scenery. But the book just contains how to model walls, trees. fields etc from scratch. There is nothing on assembling these elements into realistic landscapes. Nowadays it is possible to buy all the items that the author creates off-the-shelf, and extremely high quality items at that. The problem then is how do I assemble these and create a realistic landscape? Well, this book isn't going to tell you.
I gave it 2 stars because the modelling tips are reasonable, although the results presented in the over-dark photos weren't always good. The coverage of items is sketchy e.g. there's nothing about roads or rock molds. The content is erratic e.g. fences get two paragraphs and 1 picture, rock walls get 18 pages and 54 pictures, hedges get 2 pages and 5 pictures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent modelling guide 27 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
There are a plethora of books out there to assist the model railway enthusiast. This is one of the better ones. It covers the more 'artistic' elements of the hobby and has some excellent hints and tips all clearly explained from a master modeller.

I would echo the critism of the books production - many of the photographs are far too dark. I wonder if there was a print error here? For me it prevents the book getting the 5 stars it otherwise deserves.

This is a 'must have' addition to any modellers library. Recommended.

Are you into building a model railway layout? then this is the book for you. I have been building a number of layouts and this book has taught me a lot of things that I thought I knew all there was to know.
