5.0 out of 5 stars Stop taking it personally, 21 May 2009
By Scott E. Burton (Perth, Scotland, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After ten years in full-time parish ministry with an array of congregational conflicts, diversity in personality types and various theological controveries, this book has helped me immensely. "There will always be times of inbalance in the church's emotional system, times when there are conflicts and problems that challenge the leadership. This is normal and unavoidable." (p30)

So often, quite painfully, the minister / pastor can become the lightning rod through which all storms come and, because of this, it can appear that the minister is actually THE problem. People might tend to blame him/her for any number of issues in the worship, pastoral care, mission, educational or financial life of the fellowship. Sometimes, of course, the pastor can be a serious contributor to major stresses in a church (and this is helpfully pointed out in the book.) However, Ronald Richardson clearly illustrates that more often than not there are a whole variety of reasons why some churches are able to cope with trouble and why other are less so.

"One of the keys to functioning in a healthy manner as a church is for leaders to look at the church as a system rather than as a collection of isolated people. . . If the leaders think in individualistic terms rather than in system terms, they are likely to respond to attacks as though they personally were being attacked, rather than seeing the attack as an imbalance in the system. . . The more rational and thoughtful we can be in the midst of emotional turmoil, the less vulnerable we are to the power of the emotional system." (pp26/,30)

When everyone sees that everyone contributes to the whole, then no one person can legitimately point the finger of blame at any sole church employee or volunteer. When no blame is issued to any one individual, each take their responsibility within each given situation and the church functions better as a church (the body of Christ where if one hurts all hurt).

Richardson helpfully guides the reader through issues of what causes imbalance in a church, the individuals place within the wider system, issues of closeness and distance between individuals, handling different forms of anxiety, and symptoms of church problems. Each chapter has its own helpful insight that a minister's theological training alone will not easily address.

All in all, it is a book very worthy of the reader's time. I know I will refer back to it again and again I am sure.
