inspiring, practical and a good read, 9 July 2000
I love this book. I keep it at my bedside for inspiration, I take it with me if I go away. Not only does Alisa Golden show you how to make a huge variety of books with basic materials she also inspires a love of handmade books through her own enthusiasm. Recently I was at home recuperating from illness and decided to make some of the books I'd been dreaming about making but never quite got round to. I made 17 in a week and have about 30 ideas bubbling away. You don't need to be an artist either, just able to measure a few lines and cut board with a knife. For anyone that's stressed it is great occupational therapy.

A delightful and inspiring book that is still inspiring me many months after I bought it. The author comes from a fine art background and consequently she is well versed in the tradition of artists' books. In particular, she explores how different bookbinding structures can add to the meanings of the text and images of the books. Highly recommended.

Handmade books rather than handcrafted., 21 Dec 2004
This review is from: Creating Handmade Books (Paperback)
The book has plenty of example photographs, and a lot of diagrams. Unfortunately the instructions and diagrams don't look anything like a lot of the example photographs, with the result it's a little confusing in places.
I found two major problems with this book. Firstly the items to make might LOOK nice, but they aren't really very practical, most of them being more along the lines of handmade leaflets/pamphlets than actual books.
The second problem I had was the quality of the finished product, they LOOK handmade. I prefer the idea of handCRAFTED, made by hand, so they are both unusual and personal, but still look professional.
If you just want to create pamphlet sized books, then there are plenty of options here. If you want something with a professional looking finish, I'd look elsewhere.
