Product Description

Product Description
This text teaches the fundamentals of creating complex Web applications. It explains the use of both Open Source (PHP/MySQL) and proprietary (Microsoft's ASP and Access). Using a variety of examples, it teaches the concepts behind the code, how to test it, and provides comparisons between the two technologies. Beginning with a review of basic Web technologies (HTML and JavaScript), the book progresses through the more complex issues of database design. Concepts covered include client-side versus server-side programming, database design and planning, SQL fundamentals, and regular expressions. PHP and ASP are then covered in detail using readily available MySQL and Access databases. In addition, important technologies are covered, including SQL regular and left joins, form handling, passing information using query strings, cookies and session variables, and validating user input using regular expressions. With the knowledge and experience gained here, beginners should learn the fundamental concepts behind these two technologies while more experienced developers should learn which technology works best for their specific needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, 18 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This book is very easy to understand. The book explains the use of asp, php and javascript very well with many expamples. The book includes a CD which has further working examples of php and asp which once you have understood how to set up the server are very easy to use. There is a whole section (appendix A) which explains how to set up your computer as a server, which includes IIS, php, asp and mysql.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint hearted, 9 Jan 2005
I consider myself fairly competent in using various computer applications including Macromedia Flash, Dreamweaver and Microsoft Access. After reading the previous review, i decided to buy this book. Now whilst this book does cover all of the subjects it promises, it does not have the ability to bring this information across in an easy-to-understand manner.
I would suggest buying this book only if you have some idea of how to set up a server on your computer and have some idea of how to maintain it. The explanation given in "appendix A" does not tell you how to set up your computer as a server but rather how to install IIS/MySQL and PHP.
All in all, i think the sample code on the CD will come in handy to apply to projects and it cannot be argued that this book isnt comprehensive, i just wish Jeanine Meyer could explain the concepts more clearly..
