It's fast, furious and fun and incredibly addictive. Crazy Taxi's detractors will also say it's shallow and short-lived as the chief replay value is in beating your own high-score but they miss the point; it's not meant to be a cerebral bore - it's an arcade blast you can switch on for a quick twenty minutes and not have to worry about playing through to checkpoints or putting your brain in gear.
So what's good about the Xbox version? Well, West Coast from the original game is back - but with the added jump feature and a slightly expanded play area now it does play quite differently and is still the best designed city in the game so far. The new Vegas themed city Glitter Oasis also looks excellent in places and has big broad highways giving plenty of chance for some really unsafe driving. Some of the new lighting effects from buildings and headlights are, frankly, spectacular. The music is still good fun. The Crazy Box mini-games selection has been expanded and is even better. The handling is perhaps the slickest yet.
It's not all good news though. The game still (unforgivably) suffers from slowdown at times (particularly in Glitter Oasis). There's still no multi-player games. Plus, for some reason, the reverse gear is slow and sticky on this version. The Small Apple map doesn't stand up against the other two - even worse considering both Big Apple and Square City from previous games were much more fun and could have been included. Oh, and it's shallow, of course.
Having said that, if you're an arcade fan, it's great fun and you will come back to it - I was playing the Dreamcast original regularly up until I bought my Xbox. Given the paucity of half-decent games being released on the Xbox, it's a must-have really.
